Bad tee boxes

I have played on a lot of pourly kept tee boxes. Some look like mounds and other are very slanted. Aren't true championship courses required to keep their tee boxes level and flat if they are going to hold tournaments?

I hate nothing worse than a tee box that sets me up with a hook stance.

Can't say I have played on a "pourly kept one" myself....

I hate that too. I really hate those boxes where they let the grass grow long as rough. A few months ago I got so pissed I broke out my sandwedge and gave it a little "mowing" so I could get set up correctly. Now if I had some sort of device that would help "level" my ball setup out... too bad nobody makes one...

HUGE pet peeve for me!
almost every tee box at my home course sets me up in a hook stance (ball above my feet, and it really messes me up. i much prefer the ball below my feet than above.

you guys need to get some game..and this wont bother you.

take what the course gives you.

I personally hate it to. I also hate when the point you directly in the woods.

I don't imagine you will likely find to many uneven tee boxes that do not have possibility for a flat lie on Trump National, but I am just guessing. I wish I were so unlucky

Big difference between poor course management by the player and putting yourself in that position, and poor course management by a course super.

This would, and has been grounds for me in the past to not play a course again. In the same sense, my old course used to not mow or weedwack around the bunkers, and indicated they wanted a more natural look. That is fine around a fairway bunker, but when I have to spend my 5 minutes trying to locate my ball around a greenside bunker, and slow down the course and eventual have to take a drop when I am within 10' of the green, this is a problem. I just always left with the impression they were lazy. Again though, not something I couldn't/shouldn't play around, so not enough to make me find a new course.

My biggest and probably only complaint about the conditions of my current course that there is little sand in the bunker. It is a simple matter of money, which is the only reason I find it annoying. After all, it is a hazard and you should play around the hazard. A downhill or uphill lie can be played around as well by proper course management and familiarity of the course. But putting you on a tee box where you have no option to play around outside of getting 2 club lengths is just a sign of a poorly kept course IMO.

edit 1 - probably my worst pet peave in this sense is a course that sets up a tee box with a mat because they can't grow grass due to lack of sun. Compounding this by not being able to sink a tee to the proper height. My old course had a tee box with no grass due to lack of sun, but at least you could sink a tee in the dirt.

While growing up back East, there was a muni course called Cobbs Creek. Anyway, and this is no exaggeration, you had to get on the ground and hammer the tee into the ground with the heel of your golf club.

Well these super short Wisconsin courses have got something right. Never have had a poor T-box like you're describing...

I don't like uneven boxes either, but you have to play the course as you find it. When you put the ball on 3" peg, isn't it above your feet already? It's all a matter of making adjustments in your setup, and that's what you do for every other shot except off the tee. And everyone else in the competition is in the same boat, so...??

My home course is technically a muni, and they rebuilt a couple of the worst tee boxes a few years ago. Unfortunately, one of those boxes is still as hook slanted as it was prior to the rebuilding. All one can do is just shrug your shoulders and deal with it.

At least they are always mowed properly, and the divots are sanded in daily, and they are big enough for one area to recover before the tees have to be played in that location again.

i didnt think of using my club as a hammer but when i played today i had to spend a good 10-15 seconds to get my tee into the ground because of the cold, and it was barely in there too, good thing i carry short tees and not those crazy 4" tees because i'd be in trouble if i had them. But the biggest differnce was on the greens, they were all firmer than usual because of the cold, but this one par five in the shade was ridiculus. Im hitting my third to a front pin from about 50. i'd say it landed 10' short, and takes a HUGE bounce over the pin, i thought there was a rock on the green that i hit, it made the same noise a ball makes when you hit a cartpath, but no the green was just above frozen, then then second and third bounces are huge too and it bounces off the green.

It doesn't bother me. However, it does take a little more time to find the perfect spot.

One reason I love my home course. Since it hosts many many tournaments, and had some of our modern greats play it(Tiger, Phil), the all around management of it is superb. Playing from the tips of the teeboxes actually lets you feel like a pro, just how they make them and the scenery around them.
