buying new irons - and these launch monitor things

I'm really skeptical of these launch monitor things.

I'm interested in some new custom fit irons.. but I would really like to be able to hit them outside and watch the ball flight, distance, etc before dropping the $$ on something that I've only hit into screens.

Anyone want to share there experience with these launch monitors and such? And not to be rude, but how about including hour handicap or average score?

I've found monitors to be a great tool. Although you make a valid point with the "real world testing", the launch monitor can provide you with concrete numbers that will help maximize your distance, launch and spin parameters.

However, that being said, be sure to concentrate more on feel and balance when swining moreso than the numbers. That's the salesman's job. If you find a set that feel like butter, and you get decent numbers with them, buy them. Feel is such a huge factor in both the enjoyment and wantoness to play the game.

I don't care if it hits the ball 10 yards further, if it feels like rebar or a wet noodle, I'm not playing it.

Cheers,

I'm with rock 100%. While there is no substitute for range time, a launch monitor can give you good feedback, assuming you focus mostly on how the clubs feel to you.

I am for the Mizuno National Fitting Centre in Ecosse in Jan. Really looking forward til it. Outdoor bays and all the up-to-date launch monitoring shizzle. Some beers, good food, couple of titty bars...quality !
