Serendipity...the 2.5 hour round

I haven't played in a month and teed of yesterday really rusty. Index 7.2 and handicap of 9. Shot an 88.

This morning, only one other member of my group showed up. There were two other foursomes teeing off on the front side at about 7:45 am so we went off the back and played it in 1:15...I fashioned a pretty good side with six pars and three bogies.

We went straight to to the first and teed off again. In the distance we could see the foursomes on #5...played the back in 1:15 on the nose for a 2.5 hour whirlwind round. Shot an 81 and had a blast. 55F/12C at tee off and 65F/18C at finish, under brilliant blue skies....

Probably my last round before Christmas...

i like to play quick, but that is almost too quick for a foursome. I dont think a foursome can really play that fast and not feel rushed or really enjoy the round.

I am with you there Bravo.
Am usually first off the tee on sundays and if we are only a twosome am usually done by 10:30. makes for a good pace when you never have to wait, just get in a rhythm, march to hole and move on. sweet golf and great weather today huh?

I'm the other end of the scale, 2 of the guys that play in my 4ball are what are described as "deliberate" players ..2.5 hours would be near enough our front nine time, only redeeming fact is that they're both playas .. one guy is off 3.6 and others is 7.2

Wow!! That is a fast round. The fastest I ever played was 2 hours and 45 minutes. I played alone on a vacation in Hilton Head and I was the first one to tee off. I probably could have played it quicker but I slowed down after the front nine so I could try to enjoy it for longer.

I can't walk that fast.

I walked 18 on Forest Hills Saturday afternoon in 3.5 hours, playing with one other guy. We had to wait a few minutes on a couple of holes.

The yesterday, I played 18 at Persimmon Hill in about the same time, riding.

A lot of what determines my time is how much time I spend looking for balls in the woods.

It's why I wake up at 5:30 in the summer, first off and it's a quick round.

We were playing out of a cart...both of us hit it decently...and most of the time I would park the cart halfway between where we found our shots. It was kind of cool, we'd get out at the same time and walk to our balls...whoever was out hit first and the next player was usually only seconds behind...we hit a few in the rough but didn't have to spend much time searching. This time of year, the grass is brown/blonde and the rough is low. Finding balls is - usually - easy....

I saw a speech a few years ago by Frank Broyles who was Arkansas' Athletic Director and past football coach in the 60's. One of his best friends is Darryl Royal - the famous coach of Texas' football team. Former rivals who are great friends.

The two of them are members of some exclusive club somewhere. They played golf pretty often for quite a number of years after they retired from coaching.

He said they would play 54 holes a day in about 7.5 hours. It was always a twosome and rather than riding together, each had his own custom golf cart especially customized for speed...So they'd tee off and each one would zoom to his ball and hit and that's the way they would play.

He said that "other members are pretty nice about letting us play through because we would only hold them up about 3 minutes or so"...translated: "We are so famous and powerful, that there was an 'unspoken rule' that when the two of us showed up behind a group, they always let us through".

He said they played 54 hours in an average of 7.5 hours for about ten years before their backs started to "talk loudly" to them after each marathon....

Bravo, I recall reading somewhere about some retired pro golfer (Ken Venturi, maybe?) who played his home course in whatever order he wanted. The reporter that tagged along said they would finish the first hole, the pro would then announce that he wanted to play #17 and he'd drive across fairways to 17, play it, then announce that he wanted to play #3, and so on. I doubt he had trouble with other players on the tees, either.
