went to the driving range.. and...

Went out to the driving range Sunday since the weather was so pretty.

Let me say - I haven't been hitting my driver good in a long time. I've been blocking everything out to the right. UGLY!

Well.. the first few balls Sunday were no different.

Then I thought I'd try pointing my left foot (I'm right-handed) out a little more towards the target. To allow me to clear my hips a little better. Well I'll be danged if every single one didn't just fly on a rope right down the middle. I sat there and hit at least 40 balls, and 95% of them were right down the middle about 260-280. That's about as far as I can hit them with the ol' 10.5 degree driver.

I have the same tendancies. If I flare my left foot out though, I am just putting a band-aid on a poor release and will eventually start in with the pull-slice. My better results are to go with the ever-so-slightly closed stance and let the clubhead release. This lets me really swing against my left side and produces the the longest, straightest drives. Messing around on the range is one of my biggest downfalls. Deciding on one thing, working on doing it that way every time is key for me. Reading up on swings I found tips suggesting to setup like you mentioned. For me this leads to clearing too early. Turning in allows me to better utilize my upper body strength in sync with my lower body.

This is a classic Ben Hogan tip...to flare out the left foot slightly to better permit the clearing of the hips....

Golden.

Hello All

I also believe Greg Norman used to do this from time to time.

I tried it but it just made my slice worse at the time. ( Maybe I over flared)

Not just Greg Norman, a majority of pros do this.

Not only does it help clear the hips faster, but it creates more torque by not letting for hips turn as far, but your shoulders still can. I have used this since my second week of golf when i read hogans 5 lessons.
