Winter conundrum

Why,oh why,are greens rock hard yet the fringe is soft? Its always been the case,I think its a natural phenomenomonenom not exlained by science.Played in a pro-am today, average pro score was high seventies,72 won by an ex-tour player.

anway, explain this scientific marvel, every frigging green rock hard, every frigging fringe soft, even though temps never got above 2,the fringes were still soft

edited for retard spelling

Well, now I'm not positive for over-all, but this is applicable to my home courses.

The greens are rock hard because the grass is shorter. You see, the top layer of water melts off, leaving the top of the green somewhat soft, and usually slow, but if you even stick your finger in a divot you've created(I've made a couple on our greens), you'll feel that it's usually frozen.

On the fringe the same amount of water evaporates, but since the grass is longer, it feels softer because there is more distance to the ice.

think of it like a jacket, usually the thicker the jacket the warmer you are. Thin layer of grass equals little warmth for the ground. Add wind into the factor and it dries out the greens really fast.

Because you're living near the Arctic Circle?

It's almost Christmas here and people are walking around in shorts.

Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? The porcupine has its' pricks on the outside.

Our greens don't have any bounce at all, nor do the fringes or fairways.... not under 2.5 feet of snow....

We got about 8 inches, and I was hoping to squeeze in a round before Christmas.
