Handicaps

I received an email from a member of my club not very happy with the scores at the last comp.It was a better ball pairs 3/4 handicap stableford which was won with 44 points.I dont think it was a high score. My playing partner and myself won two years ago with 47 points.Granted some of the scores in the monthly stablefords have been stupid up to 49 points on singles comps. We have brought a rule in all members must play 3 comps a year or you cannot enter any comps without putting 3 cards in for handicap. This had to be done as people we had never seen before in matches just appeared with handicaps which had not been adjusted since they joined (which could be years ago).Trying to explain to disgruntled members if people dont play comps how can we keep an eye on their handicaps just dident seem to get through to them.Anyone else had problems with players just appearing now and again and winning then disapearing into ablivion.

I did, actually, with myself.

I hadn't played a competition previous to this year for a GHIN handicap in 3 1/2 years, well, 3 1/2 years ago I was a 16 handicap. I go out and shoot a 69, people were furious. Now, I'm a well intentioned person and I openly admitted that my game got better, but due to a broken collar bone I didn't play for nearly a year, and school usually kept me from competing.

Thus, they changed my handicap to scratch after a second 69 the next day. People were absolute a-holes to me about it thinking I was sandbagging, when I actually requested they switch me to scratch before the tournament(they refused).

*shrug*

**EDIT**Actually, my mistake, they switched it to 2.4 because of all the math and logistics of re-setting a handicap in tournament conditions. Anyway, you get the point.

That's why I like flighted tournaments, with a mandatory number of rounds posted beforehand. Besides, I don't know of 1 single digit handicapper who likes losing to a 24 handicapper on account of giving so many strokes.

I hear you, I only play flighted tournaments with no handicap and this is usually a -2 or better. I played a tournament at shorline golflinks and people were pretty upset that my index at the time was +2.77 and I was playing guys that were mostly borderline -2. Turns out i had a sciatic problem that weekend and didnt shoot very well but still finished 4th in my flight (on vicotin none the less, LOL)

My club only uses tournament scores in setting handicaps for tournament events. The attached chart is my handicap table from GHIN.com. Note all the "T" scores are what my club uses for handicap computation. (I hate when forum pages won't do lists correctly... makes trying to post stuff like this a real pain.)

Low handicap players always get the short end of the stick in stableford comps though. They have to be shooting 40 points at east to be in with a shout and it's a lot tougher for a 6 handi to do that than a 16 handi
