hapless, hybrid ho needs some help--

when I started, 4 years ago, my 3, 5, & 7 hawkeye VFT woods worked fine.(for a beginer) The 13*-3wood sometimes was a little hard to hit off the short grass, but worked well off the tee when the driver went on vacation. This past summer I demoe'd a heavenwood 4 hybrid (23*), liked it a lot so in a weaker moment picked up a 2 (17*)and 1 (14*). Now I'm poached, and don't know if I should work on all 3 hybrids and drop the VFTs. OR, just carry the 4 hybrid for puching out from the trees and on fairway bunkers and keep the 3 & 5 wood. My driver is pretty consistent. In other words, do "Real men carry 3 hybrids?"

This is such a delicate issue, but it really comes down to this:

Do whatever you feel will make you play the best golf. Period.

I carry 0 hybrids because they're all hook machines for me. And, I don't have a real tough time hitting long irons. However, from the success that hybrids have, I can't say that they are for hacks, because they ain't. If you play better golf with a hybrid in your bag, then be all means do it.

That being said, those Hawkeyes are sweet woods. Keep the 3 and 5 in your bag and get a coupld hybrids for your 3 and 4 iron. Then watch your scores drop....assuming you can chip and putt.

Cheers,

R35

Last I checked I carried 3 hybrids, and could still perform my manly duties. In the process of doing so, my handicap dropped 6 strokes in the 2-3 months since going to 3 hybrids. I still get no where near the distance on my 16* 1i/R as I did on a 13* FW, but during that timeframe I also opted for my 5i in place of the 3w. I plan on reshafting the 3w over the winter and see what it can do for me next year.

Edit 1 - the 23* Baffler is one of my favorite clubs

Of course not!! Only 'girlie men' carry 3 hybrids!!! LOL

So many people forget the most important premise of this game... "It's not how, it's how many!" Carry and play and enjoy what works best for YOU!! How does Webster define the word 'hybrid'? In this game, the hybrids are somewhere in between... and combination of... irons and woods. Most of us would struggle with a 1-iron, yet for some strange reason we want to replace a perfectly good 3-wood with something that falls in between it and a 1-iron. Still many of us would struggle with a 2-iron. Yet, because they are the "hot" items of the times, we think some derivitave of a 2-iron should replace our 5 wood. That is not necessarily the case.

In the case of the 4h hybrid, it replaces another long iron... somewhat difficult to hit... but does not make any attempt to replace a fairway wood (unless you would have a 9 or 11 wood in the bag).

Again, it depends on your game... on YOUR game! You have the privilege of owning the hybrids. Work with them... see if they actually might fit your swing and your game as well or better than the VFT's. But, don't reconstruct your swing to fit the hybrids and throw the rest of your game to the wolves just to save the hybrids.

Do real men carry 3 hybrids? Certainly! Look at the senior tour. Many bags contain at least 3 hybrids. (I doubt many carry a 1h, however.) Personally, I've tried Callaway, TM, Genex, Sonartec, and Adams... over the past 3 years or so... and can't find a hybrid I can hit worth a da**! But, that's me! I've always enjoyed fairway woods and long irons. Doesn't mean that will work for my playing partner, my next door neighbor, or YOU. Try 'em... give 'em a fair chance... make a judgement call and don't look back!

I have never hit a hybrid to this day, but once I get home I am going to demo a fli hi MP hybrid from the mizuno tour van on Jan 3rd. I wont hit the wood iron types because i cant stand the look of them.

i carry three hybrids, thinking about a fourth. Whatever gets around the course as close to par as possible is the best thing for you. When you beat your playing partners they will stop laughing. If you cant beat your playing partners, then its time for the fairway woods again.

I've gone through at leat 10 hybrids trying to figure how how the hell they're easier to hit. I can hit my hogan 2iron easier. I now carry only a 3w and driver and the rest are irons.

As has been stated, it really depends on what you hit the best. I have tried several types of hybrids and some I have hit decently. However, I just took my # 2 and #3 hybrids back out of my bag and put a 7w in. Also, I took out my 3W and replaced it with a 4w. I did this because I was hitting my #2 hybrid and the 3w about the same (within 10 yards) distance. I actually can hit the 7 wood a little higher and and farther than I could my #3 hybrid. All of this reconfiguring was so that I could go back to 4 wedges again.

The "manliness" of carrying 4 wedges is a topic for another thread.

Hit whatever lets you shoot the lowest scores.

Allow me to commend everyone on this forum for not turning this harmless topic into a medium for belittling others.

I remember, on a forum much like this one, that this topic came up, and there were some who went so far as to say that anyone who carried a hybrid was not a real golfer. Well, that lit some fires and burned some bridges. The hybrid discussion, along with arguments about which continent will win the Ryder Cup (Antarctica 2028) and who on the site gives the worst advice (me) is what killed that last site and luckily a lot of those lost souls who no longer had a place to carry on valid golf related discussions came here.

As for how many hybrids are too many, there is no right answer. I have 3, have thought about adding a 4th, but will probably drop one to reinstate my 3 wood (his prison sentence is over now that the wind has picked up). I have a friend who can't hit them, but it's different for everyone. Besides, nowhere on the score card does it ask what club you hit, just how many strokes you took.

Rescue Mids? Pff...what a hack.

I played this October with DaveE down in Austin. That guy can flat out hit a hybrid. Why carry irons if you hit hybrids better?

Make this game easier, not harder.

Even if it makes you look like a girl...(check the bag, I carry a 7 wood...)

with 3 hybrids, and using ladies balls (HX Pearl) I

thought I could use an avatar that might be appropriate. In February I think I can find a nice pink floral number and maybe some pink HX pearl head covers for the Florida trip to Inverness. Nothing beats hitting from the pink tees.

Bottom line: Score-card shows how well you shot, not what clubs you used.

All long as we have the kick-ass admins and moderators that we have on this site, we are in much less danger of becoming flame city. I think a little heartfelt ribbing is a good thing. Defend and attack (with a genuine sense of fair play), and I don't think there anyone with a modicum of sense can complain. And if someone gets out of hand, Sling and the others will simply vaporize them (after a gentle reminder of the need to be civilized).

I think I visited the same site mors mentions and

it was pretty frustrating reading through the imbecile, childish rubbish hoping to see some mature content. I like the rules here and look forward to contributing in a somewhat small way if I can. As I am relatively new to golf, but passionate about the game, I appreciate the help here.
