Question for Low Handicappers

I see some VERY low handicap numbers listed in the signatures of many Shot Talkers. My question is, if you shoot these kind of scores, some of you MUST be golf pros or teach golf at least as a sideline, right? (I think JEFF4i taught high schoolers as example).

I mean, I was watching the 199? Amateur Championship (Tiger was 18) and it said he was a 3 handicap. Hard to imagine Tiger having a handicap. Maybe they were all wrong but it was on the Golf Channel this afternoon.

Anyway, now I know why people send in their swing videos for some of you guys to analyze and critic.

they probably meant +3. no way that at 18 tiger was a 3 handicap, he was winning junior tourneys around the country and shooting 60s on pro length courses.

Probably was something to do with the match play "jargon". Didn't make sense to me for the reasons you stated.

But my real drift of this thread was HOW MANY OF YOU LOW HANDICAPPERS TEACH GOLF?

In highschool, Tiger was posting quite a few scores in the 29-31 range in his matches, so its deffinatly +3.

As for me, im starting to flirt with scratch. I plan on coaching JV golf next year. The only thing that comes close to golf, is sadly teaching golf. Since i was the #1 guy this year, I would always be the first done, leaving all of my teamates still on the course, and i would always jump in the cart with my coach and try to help some of the kids struggling. I learned most of my friends swings and there poor tendencies more then i learned mine, so it wasnt hard to help them out.

I played against and with Tiger my entire Junior and college career and can assure you he was a plus something from 14 on!!! Dont know what they were saying!!

as for the low handicaps, I played college golf at Wake Forest and had one of the shortest most unimpressive professional careers of all time on the Canadian tour!!!

What is the difference between the plus 3 and the 3 handicap?

I give little mini-lessons to my playing partners on what they're doing wrong with their swing and how to fix it, if it's going badly for them.

plus three means 3 strokes are added to his score, so its a reverse handicap.

I would tend to think that the scratch golfer is concentrating on his game and not too worried about giving advice. I have found however that the 22- 32+ handicapper is full of advice for you

A teaching pro could probably get away with a 9 handicap but must pass the PAT at 15 over par on an easy course over two rounds so you dont have to be a good golfer to teach. I played golf in High School and was decent but not great, my handicap was from 7 - 9 and that equated to about a high 70's on most courses. I did after high school drop down into my best of +2.77 and did attempt to compete on PGA Tour Qualifiers, Q School, Nationwide Tour, and The US Open. The closest I had ever come was 2nd standby for the Nationwide Tour for the San Jose Open. Most of the tour players were easily +4 - +6 handicaps and those few strokes were the killers of me. I have only had a swing coach for a few years and never really had a great feeling about them so I read books and coached myself. In 2007 I am going to start competing again on an amateur level and in 2008 I am going to start competing on a pro level but my goal is to jump down into the +3 or +4 range by the end of 2007. I think it possible since I am not as reckless as I used to be and my course management skills have matured. Right now I am close to shooting 3 - 4 under par but these are not pro level courses they are 140ish slopes.
