Thread: Hybrids, Bafflers, irons, woods

  1. Hybrids, Bafflers, irons, woods

Maybe in my haste to shave a few more strokes off my game at this early stage of my golfing... I'm finding myself reaching for my irons (3 or 4) instead of my fairway woods, but I'm not getting the disatnce, of course, but I'm more accurate with my irons (begining to) over my woods... actually as I'm improving with my irons, I'm getting worse with my woods
I've been looking at Cobra Hybrids and Bafflers.

    Ideas... suggestions... comments ?

  2. First, I would suggest that you never give up

on a club. When you practice, hit shots with all types of clubs. This will give you confidence eventually in all of them, and after all, you will have to use all of them. Try developing the same tempo with all of your clubs which will help minimize the differences in set-up, length of arm swing, etc.

As you move from shorter clubs to longer clubs, you stand farther from the ball, swing less upright, and do not have to bring the arms up as high (you do not have to get the shaft of a wedge parallel to the ground). You will also have the club face stay on the target line longer before the clubhead comes inside. On all full shots, I would suggest that your coil is about the same in that your back faces the target.

Again, do not give up on any of your 14 clubs (and perhaps a few others that might be used on occasion). Down the road you will be happy for doing this.

As you change from one club to another, be sure to change targets as well.

    Sincerely, Cypressperch

IMO, I don't think you can go wrong with the Baffler, assuming you can play hybrids O.K., alot of people tend not to like them compared to a FW, whereas many like myself swear by them. The baffler gave me enough incentive to replace my 5w and 7w. Next to my putter it is likely the most reliable club it my bag. Next to my putter and GW which is my primary chipping club, the baffler and 7i are likely the most used clubs in my bag that I tend to go to due to their consistency. I haven't tried the newer DWS or Pro from this year, mine is the older model I picked up a couple years ago. I could never really hit a 3i or 4i. I own a 23*, and it would fill the range of what I would expect out of the 4i for which it is supposed to replace.

Although if you want graphite, I would likely choose another club, or have it reshafted from the stock graphite shaft, the Aldila they put on there is just a nasty shaft IMO, and a little light to my taste. This coming from someone who has the Aldila NV65s on my driver. I was really disappointed when looking to replace my 5w and 7w, hence the reason I have Halos. Although the Nippon steel shaft they use is by far the best steel shaft I have ever tried, and I played steel on all my clubs but my driver prior to picking up the Halos. It is also about a $50 steel shaft.

I believe the DWS and the Pro have the same Aldila, but I never looked that closely. I was also not too fond that they put only 2* gaps between the 16-20* clubs.

I have seen the original with the steel shaft around for $99, down as low as $79 on sale. When I saw them for $79, I thought seriously about picking up a 26* to replace my 5i, but decided to hold off. I hit my 5i good enough.

edit 1 - Actually it looks like the Pro model comes with the Fujikura Speeder stock for graphite, I wish that were the case when I bought my other 2.
