When the goin get tough...

When the going gets tough, the goose gets going!

I have to give props to the winner of course Zach Johnson, great watching him play the 3 holes i saw today (yes.... I missed sunday at the masters....). But id like to recognize one of the grittyest players of all time, Retief Goosen, playing the last two days at 70-69 (-5), while everyone was going up.

The Goose deserves some praise as he is WAYYY overlooked.

His swing is so relaxed and yet he hits the ball a mile. Hes definatly got a good chance of winning a major this year.

I love and respect gentlemen like Goosen. Manners and comportment mean much to him...he's in the Gary Player mould from South Africa.

Nick Faldo said on our Sunday telecast that he makes wonderful dinner company. His on course persona is calculated and is what he feels comfortable with.

No Fist Pumps...and no Temper Tantrums.

Honestly as he teed off on #10 - I would have handed the Masters jacket to him. He was hot and has been there before and knows the "terrortory" of final round Major play.

Goes to show that all personality types can win in any sport. Palmer and Woods are the outgoing, expressive types...Goosen and Faldo much different. Goose simply stays quiet and Faldo was a 'stalking methodical grinder'...

On course persona and real life personality often are quite different.

Champions figure out - internally - how to get it done in the ring of fire.

While I was watching the tournament, my wife walked in the room, saw Goosen, and asked "Did he just make birdie or double bogey?"

Yes it does. My wife is not a golfer but is a golf fan and Goosen is one of her favorites. He "trips her out" because he never changes expression except for the ocassional wry smile when he hits some sort of miraculous shot like that one yesterday when he hit the wedge from out of and over the trees to about 5 feet.

I don't know if you are old enough to remember the great Jim Brown who played running back for the Cleveland Browns.

Hall of Fame running back.

If he lost 3 yards on a carry - he would get up slowly from the pile.

If he had a brilliant 73 yard run - he would get up slowly from the pile.

If he was in 100% tip top shape and was tackled, he would get up slowly from the pile.

If he was smashed up to hell and back he would get up slowly from the pile.

Psychological Warrior.

Done.

Although I was never a Boston Bruins fan ... that same consistency and humility often characterized Bobby Orr's style.
Score a goal ... skate back to center ice, calmly and no raw-raw nonsense.

Score a fabulous goal ... same thing!

Aaaaand he did it sooooo often!!

I remember the commentators mentioning something about memories of one of the US Opens (2000 at bethpage?) where he completely screwed the tee shot to give it up to Tiger. Just a lack of confidence for that particular shot i guess.

(mentioned on the post game stuff btw).

This was his answer.

Q. It looked like you picked an iron off the 13th tee box; can you just talk about that?
RETIEF GOOSEN: It's one of these hybrid utility 1-iron-type things. I hit it quite a long way. In the past I've done it, and the fairways, as firm as they now are, you can probably hit that and still get a bit of run down there. If I feed a good one of those down the left side in, I would probably hit a 3-iron in for my second. I blocked it out right, laid up, hit the third just a little bit too hard and hit a good putt. Didn't go in.

No "chicken dance"?
No "Icky Shuffle"?
No "sharpie"?

The guy just did his job, scored TD's, and then didn't act like a complete idiot?

How boring that must have been for the fans, eh?
