BMW Championship at Wentworth

Poor old Paul McGinley. He had the BMW Championship in the palm of his hand at Wentworth yesterday. He was striking the ball brilliantly, putting well, etc. but when it came down to the crunch, his sphincter collapsed and he crawled in from 16 with a couple of bogies in his shorts!

Fair play to the big Argentine Angel Cabrerra though. The big hitting South American (crushing it 330 yards at times) was also on song. So the big guy won and McGinley's laundress has some work to do to get those skid marks removed. Bright lining though was that Paul is now back in the world's top 50, which gets him to the US Open.

And the last Irish winner at Wentworth?

Seems a nice fella, does McGinley. Seen him out here at the Dubai Desert Classic a couple of times - both at the course and in the hotel, we were staying at the same one. He always took time to sign autographs and have a chat with people, even at the hotel when i'm sure he'd rather not be bothered.

There was excellent coverage of this event on some satellite channel and I watched quite a few holes...I enjoy the commentary of the Euro events.

Yes the man did let it get away from him whilst Cabrera came on strong...

Isnt this an English course? (I am too lazy to look it up...I had this impression from the TV coverage)

Yep, Wentworth is in England...not too far South West of London. A lot of corporate membership and I was lucky enough to play there last year with some business contacts - otherwise it's pretty expensive.

Has a nightmare of a first tee. You stand on the tee box and you generally have two groups of four waiting behind you. Plus, about 20 yards in front of the tee-box you have the access road to the car park - cars waiting to get in or out have to sit and wait for the tee to clear. Then, to cap it all, on the left side of the fairway...stretching from about 50 yards to 100 yards out...there is the practice putting green. RIGHT by the fairway. It's a fill-your-pants tee off. A guy in the group in front of us had to make the Walk of Shame onto the practice green to play his second shot.

Great bacon rolls in the halfway house, though..!

Good God - never heard of such a tee. I'd being wearing a helmet as I practiced putting there...

Are they cramped for space in terms of getting ample acreage for the course?

I think it's more that they dont expect too many duffers to turn up as it's so freaking expensive and hard to get a tee-time for non-members...

nice to hear Paul being remarked on as a nice fella which he is, he lived and played out of a club up the road from me. I was quite surprised to see his stats there during the week as he is alomost in Padraigs league for 2nd place finishes I think he is around 3 or 4 wins and then 16 .. 2nd place finishes.

Putting a human touch on it for a minute it was nice to see he was determined to wish Darren Clarke and his wife all the best and mentioned that he was hoping to win the event for Heather, as I am sure you know poor Heather is in very bad shape as her cancer has come back. Anyway by all accounts Paul's wife and Heather Clarke are best friends and it seems it was touch and go as to whether Heather would make it through saturday night.
I suppose it just puts a bit of perspective on it

I did not know about this. What kind of cancer does she have??
