Finished third in my tourney

We had our twosomes (two man best ball) tourney this weekend.

We were flighted and ended up in the second flight. My handicap is 10 and my partner had a 14 which is high for him. 36 holes over two days.

We had a fun party with open bar on Friday night. Pari-mutuel betting on all teams. I did not take us.

We started Saturday afternoon at 12:45 and I came out hot. Birdied the 3rd and then a thunderstorm took us inside. We watched The Open for awhile and went back out. We finished with a 65 which put us in 5th out of 8 teams. I had two birdies and played a typical round with an individual score of 83.

This morning, we teed off at 7:45. My partner came to play and carried me most of the day. I had one birdie and several pars but he was The Man for us. We finished 3rd in the 2nd flight and got $100 credit in the pro shop.

A really fun weekend. I usually don't play in this tourney but am committed to it next year. The course is in good shape and the weather was decent...

We had our Captains Day from the golf society on Saturday. I came 10th of 85 players. Shot 16 pts on the front 9, knew I needed to go level par on the back for 24pts and a 40 point total which usually would have you on the podium.

Stood on #15, level for the back 9, it's a shortish par 5 512 yards (D + 4 iron) and proceeded to knock 2 drives OB - calamitous mistake as there acres of room out left. So scratched the hole and with it my chances for the big prize.... but wait #16 index 3, (d+ 6iron to 8 feet) drained the putt a 4 pointer !! ... #17 174 yards 7 iron to 20 feet straight uphill putt drained for 3 points.

So I'm standing on #18 index 1, with 37 pts .... it's a dogleg right with a lake on the elbow of the dogleg for those that try and bale out long left. I play a 3 wood for position, turns out the position is 175 yards on a down hill lie with a 160 yard carry over a further lake greenside..... yeah yeah I know now what the sensible play should've been.... dunked it into the lake, pitched up and a 3 putt to rub salt into the wounds for a triple and zero points.

The winner had 39 points, in hindsight a bogey would've done me, as I had a better back nine - but everyone I talked to at the prize giving dinner had similar hard luck stories.... que ssera sera eh ??? ...shot an 82 off the back sticks so I was happy enough, also turns out that I was the lowest handicap to win a prize - 6 crystal whiskey glasses that I'll ask IG and Kilted to contribute to in our next rematch

Sounds like your were striking it well. A couple of brain farts thrown in, but hey, we all get them. I'd be happy to contribute to fillin' the glasses. My piss is World renouned!

I played Saturday v. Par. The course beat me by a shot, but that actually equates to 35 pts. My brain fart this week was playing a shot from a dip to a spot where I thought the green was. I nailed it over a spot of gorse I had taken as my line. Imagine my surprise when I climbed up over the hill to hear my playing partners say it was burried 30 yards right of the green in the rough.

I went back and looked again from where I played and didn't I confuse the bush. What a dumbass!!

I actually used that phrase of yours "brain fart" in describing the 15th nightmare to anyone that would listen .....could've got home with 3 wood and the hybrid so I didn't need to take out the big dog.

You seem to be chiseling out a lot of scores mid 70's at the moment IG, that kinda speaks for itself ... might need to readjust handicaps b4 the next meet

Bravo sorry for the threadjack ... delighted that you picked up the money from the tourney. I like 4 ball format myself ... so long as you're contributing to the scores and there's a synergy with your partner. We have an inter-club competition here which is a foursome format .... there's no hiding place. You only have to look at the damage done in Ryder Cup !! Fourball allows you play your own game, foursomes is a different mindset - I view it as compromising your natural game for the greater good of your partner...congrats again

Good shooting DI...I did have a great brain fart that cost us second though.

The 17th is a reachable 490 yard par 5 with a right dogleg. I hit a decent drive and had 260 to the center. A large tree protects the right front side of the green. The shot that reaches the green from this distance cannot carry the tree and stop. So the player must hit a long fade round the tree and let it roll on.

I hit my Sonartec 14 and it looked great. Finished in the rough about 6-7 yards short of the green. All I wanted was a nice chip onto the front and one putt for birdie.

I fatted it. Arrrggghhh!!

Then I three putted for bogey. If I had birdied that our prize would have increased from $100 pro shop credit each to $250 each.

I'll never forget this. On the other hand, there is no doubt that throughout the tourney I made many really good shots that helped us along the way. I think we remember our play late in the round more though. And of course he had no way of knowing how we stood relative to the field at the time.

My short game is either super or horrible.

Agree totally Bravo. I was out in the 1st 4 ball on Saturday, the Captain had asked me previously if I'd mind going around with my DV camera after and shooting the guys as they came down the 14th (caught their drives) and 18th (approaches and putts). So I was doing my Peter Alliss thing and then for a bit of interaction with the guys it was the usual ..."how did you play" ..."is the course on fire"...... everyone had a hard luck story .... very few will remember the 30 footer they holed for bogey (they'll tell you if it's a birdie)

So yeah I healthy dose of realism and objectivity will work wonders .. still doesn't mean it wont hurt

Congrats all around. I wish I had hard luck story to tell, but no golf for me this weekend.

Did DIY all day Saturday and my back was to shot to play on Sunday morning. Made some brownie points though by going with the wife to some shops and local wineries. No point in her knowing my back was too sore to play. hehe.
