Almost the exact same tee shot. I can not believe he tried it again, going for the green. Arnold is probably proud!

Hell of a shot. Totally different than Winged Foot. He needed to go for it this time, and he pulled off a shot that shows why he is the #2 player in the world. Plus, he putted really well. Good win.

When he ended up in the trees, I put money on Pampling and Clarke (just to be safe), how wrong I was.

Phil's fantastic recovery shot was like a knife in the guts to Pampling.

Hell of a shot. Phil must be strong as an ox.

i don't know why people dislike Phil so much...he's a consistent winner on the tour, seems to enjoy his golf, is generally courteous and always smiling..and his short game is great to watch...yet people love to see him lose... don't get it myself

Agreed it was some shot, good win etc. But I think it was similar in a lot of ways to WF. It was the final hole. He chose the most direct route and refused to play out safe. He didn't have to go for it in Winged Foot, but he figured it was a better option that chopping out sideways. I actually think he went for the green because the pin was in such a tough spot.

Yesterday he hit a great shot, but admitted that he caught the branches with it. Luck played as much a factor in it landing on the green.

I agree that it took immense skill and strength to be able to even consider that sort of shot

Phil seems to go for everything thats not nailed down. Some you win, some you lose. I saw him hit a full on 3 wood from the trees on 8 at this year's Masters. He missed the tree by an inch! It wasn't exactly a safe shot!! And he ended up making bird! But I also saw him play pin ball with the trees several times too.

It's a bit win or bust with Phil. I kinda like it but it's risky to say the least (Doesn't he have some sort of gambling addiction?). It's certainly exciting to watch though.

That's the only reason I think the shot yesterday wasn't like Winged Foot. At WF he could have played out sideways and still won the tournament. At Colonial he had to go for it. Sure, he could have played out sideways there as well. But then he would have had to get up and down for par to force a playoff (he had to assume that anyway.) I think the shot over the trees was the smart shot in this case. It's good to see that Phil still isn't afraid to gamble.

If there's one criticism I have of his play it's that he uses the driver too often and has to rely on his short game to bail him out. Makes for some inconsistent golf.

(Listen to me - criticizing Phil Mickelson...)

Now granted, there's always two sides. But I've seen a few articles about how most people think Phil is a really amiable guy, but he can be the biggest jerk on tour with no reason.

Anyway, I was shocked how he finished that hole, hats off to him. Perfectly done.

There was a huge difference between WF and this shot. Winged Foot he was trying to hit a big slice through the opening with a 3 iron if I remember right, while the shot yesterday was a 51-52* gap wedge. It it is a much easier shot for a pro to play. At WF Tiger punches out to the Fw and tries to get up and down, while at Colonial I could easily see Tiger trying the same shot that Phil did.
