Asterisk Question

When the US takes back the Ryder Cup next month, should it have an asterisk because they didn't have the dead-weight that is Tiger Woods in team play hanging from their necks?

Nah. People make too much of the Tiger/Ryder Cup thing. In all honesty he should just politely decline the invitation of he doesn't wanna play.

Or maybe he just wanted to remind people that Europeans golf too.

I agree that they should have an asterisk if they happen to win.

T-dub is number one in the world and will always make the team on points. This will always take away a spot from someone who actually might want to play. Losing a guy that goes 1-3-1 every Ryder Cup won't hurt the Americans one bit.

Europe is definitely the favorite. What the Euros have always had in the bottom of the order is a group of guys that WANT to be there. The US doesn't even have that in the TOP of the order.

If Europe should lose the cup, I think history will NEED a footnote that this Ryder Cup was played in the "Tiger Era" without said deity. Team play just isn't his forte and the Euros should have every right to pick on that weakness for 4 matches.

Without Tiger there, that is 4 matches that the US may be even or favored in instead of a definite underdog, based on history.

Europe will trounce us.

Why? As Augster was getting at, Europe is a team, we aren't.

Nope. Just a bunch of flag waving nonsense as far as I am concerned.

Just for the record, I don't even watch the Ryder Cup and could care less about it. I prefer the President's Cup format.

It's just a cash grab exhibition. I really don't see why everyone takes it so seriously. It's an exhibition.

What is there to win? Holding a cup for two years? Saying you beat an exclusive club of folks from a certain part of the world?

This isn't the olympics where all countries would have a chance to compete and they'd at least be playing for medals.

No asterisk whoever wins since it's a team game. He couldn't win it all on his own.

Agreed. It might not help us to have Tiger in match play, but UNTIL we win the Cup, I throw the asterisk thing completely out the window. IF we win, I'll look at some stats and get back to you.

As an Aussie who doesn't get cable tv and so has never watched a Ryder Cup, I certainly have trouble understanding what all the fuss is about. I suspect one of the reasons the Euros win it so much is because until Harrington came along they hadn't had anyone since Faldo who could actually wiun anything of importance i.e. majors, so they took Ryder Cup more seriously than the US. Hell, if I blew as bad as Sergio does in real 72 hole strokeplay championships I'd get excited about winning mickey mouse 'made for tv' teams events too.

Should we put an asterisk next to the US wins before 1999? Or the win in 1999, when Tiger was on the team?
