Great US Opens

I guess most of us already have one eye on the upcoming US Open in a few weeks time.

I've been reading up on the history of the event and checking out some of the early ones. The famous 1913 championship really stands out as the most unbelievable one. 20 year old course caddy rolls up with his own 10 year old caddy and beats Harry Vardon....sorry but that is just too wonderful for words. Guess that's what really kick-started golf across the USA.

And 1925 - wiki sums it up nicely - Kenny Perry take note.......

The 1925 U.S. Open Golf Championship was a golf competition held at Worcester Country Club. The Championship was won by Willie Macfarlane in a second 18 hole playoff over Bobby Jones. Macfarlane shot a U.S. Open record 67 in the second round, but nearly blew his chance at victory with a 78 in the final round. During the first round, Bobby Jones was getting set to hit an iron shot out of the rough on the 11th hole when he felt his club move the ball ever so slightly.[1] No one else seemed to have seen this movement, but Jones called a penalty on himself. After officials were unable to confirm that the ball had actually moved, they allowed Jones to make his own ruling on whether or not he should be penalized. Jones said he was certain the ball had moved and penalized himself. The decision cost him the title, but forever added to Jones's legacy. Spectators praised him for his sportsmanship, but he would have none of it. He flatly replied, "You might as well praise me for not robbing a bank."[2] Because there were so many players with a chance on the final nine of regulation and both playoff rounds were drama-filled, William D. Richardson of the New York Times called it "easily the greatest Open Championship of them all."

I thought last year was great too - Rocco gave it everything but couldn't quite finish Tiger off. An epic in every sense.

So, what are your faves?

That was a great one, I guess I would have 2 categories. One for US Opens that I have watched and one for US Opens that I have not.

As far as ones I have watched, 2000 Pebble Beach. Tiger winning by that much and shooting that low was incredible followed closely by last years.

As for ones in the past, 1950 at Merion. Hogan coming back from a car wreck to win...

Good call about Perry, you beat me to it.

Last year was a good one, but I like Tom Kite's win too. His last round defied belief. I remember Jack Nicklaus conggratulating Monty on air, with Kite just starting the back nine. Nobody gave him a chance of shooting that golf on the back nine. The fact it was another major heartbreak for Monty only adds to the memory

I have trouble going past Tiger's demolition of the field at Pebble Beach too. Pebble Beach US Opens are like St Andrews Opens IMO, just that little bit more prestigious than Opens at other locations.
