LPGA Championship

Some thoughts on the LPGA tournament currently underway at Bulle Rock.

Some time ago a poster here wondered how far the LPGA pros hit the ball. Friday I saw Laura Davies hit her drive on the 10th hole 300 yards - uphill. She's one of the few with any serious distance off the tee. The vast majority of the tee shots were in the 220-240 yard range on a wet course that was giving up nothing but carry. A lot of the short hitters were struggling to reach the greens on the longer par 4s. I watched 4-5 groups playing the downhill 596 yd 11th and saw one player reach in 3.

With that said the drives are usually in the fairway. That's probably a good thing because players were getting their butts kicked trying to hit out of the long, wet rough.

I've never seen so many short putts (under 3') missed in a professional tournament.

Christina Kim is dumber than a sack of rocks.

Michelle Wie has the personality of a bent shitcan.

Natalie Gulbis is user friendly. She also beat out Creamer in the hot outfit contest.

I saw The Big Break's Blair walking the course. All dolled up in her "looka me" supermodel outfit.

Have always enjoyed watching the LPGA since that's the game many of we weekend amateurs play on a regular basis. The distances are much more realistic to what we see than what the PGA or Nationwide tour players can do with today's equipment.

With that said the drives are usually in the fairway. That's probably a good thing because players were getting their butts kicked trying to hit out of the long, wet rough.

Again, much more similar to our games. Hitting the ball in the fairway is paramount to carding decent scores.

I've never seen so many short putts (under 3') missed in a professional tournament.

Surprises me! Always felt the ability to not leave strokes on the greens were what set apart those who could play at the professional level.

Christina Kim is dumber than a sack of rocks.

Could do herself great bodily harm on a trampoline!!!!! Talks non-stop, yet says nothing. Probably will be Johnny Miller's replacement in the broadcast booth.

Michelle Wie has the personality of a bent shitcan.

Wealthy. Never has wanted for anything. Cannot conduct an interview where the list of negative criticism runs longer than this young lady's legs. Were I her, I'd keep the middle finger in a permanently cocked position and just play the game.

Natalie Gulbis is user friendly. She also beat out Creamer in the hot outfit contest.

As age takes its toll... as the make-up and mascarea can no longer cover the effects of the sun... as the "front porch" begins to sag towards the basement... In the meantime, she is one attractive young lady!!!!!

I saw The Big Break's Blair walking the course. All dolled up in her "looka me" supermodel outfit.

So, you would have preferred this outfit to be worn by Laura Davies???????????

Re: LPGA Championship

Actually Limp, I think in Natalie's case, her only worry is springing a leak, not sagging.

Mddubya - Unless Gulbis had them done at a very young age, they're the real deal. She's been struttin' them around since she joined the tour.

Limp - I've been attending LPGA events for 20 years. As you said, I find the golf much closer to the game I play. Friday, I got to see HOF player Julie Inkster hit a topped fairway wood that probably went 80 yards. I have that shot! Smaller crowds, lots of player/fan interaction - at least until recently.

As for Ms Wie, I think she is doing exactly what you suggested. Playing with a stiffened middle finger. I don't think she realizes that most of the people in an LPGA event gallery are actually pulling for her. She still draws the biggest gallery.

One obseervation I didn't put in my OP - I didn't hear "you da man" once during the 3 rounds I was there. Not even when Davies was on the tee.

That phrase was worn out, this week, directed towards the offspring of a 60's singing duo.....

Okay... Sorry!! I promise to behave better!!

Re: LPGA Championship

Call me sexist, but the thought of going to watch someone hit a ball 40 yards shorter than I could doesn't appeal to me (obvously going to watch Gulbis and co has it's own attractions but not golf related). I'll stick to watching real golf tournaments (mens) thanks.

OK, You're sexist. Obviously you're from the drive length = penis length crowd. Personally, I am just as impressed seeing a 5'5", 120# woman hit the ball 260 as I am watching a 6', 200# guy hit it 300.

Did you miss the part about the course being wet? They were getting no roll at all. Bulle Rock was set up at around 6800 yds and playing much longer because of the weather. I think the LPGA average is closer to 260-270.

How do you think you would do head to head against an LPGA player? My guess is that you would get your butt kicked.

Re: LPGA Championship

I know for a fact they would all kick my butt royally. But I can think of several that could make it a very enjoyable experience,

Paula, Natalie, Pressley, Petterson, ect........, they can beat my butt anyday,

Re: LPGA Championship

It's always fun to hear those with internet forum initiated handicaps, driving distances, GIRs, etc. suggest "their" brand of golf is much more exciting than that of professionals in the sport. Most who must brag of their own success and ability have a gallery of one.

But Limp--you KNOW I'm really +2 from the tips.

And I have a serious girl crush on Helen Alfredsson.

Re: LPGA Championship

I watched the last few holes of the LPGA on Sunday instead of the Memphis Open. Was very impressed with the rookie that won, she could roll the rock and had nerves of steel. We'll see her win frequently is my guess.

Re: LPGA Championship

My point is that I'm an unremarkable athlete and an even more unremarkable golfer and I could smoke drives past 95% of the LPGA tour (and keep up with the other 5%) all day long. How that sort of ball striking makes for exciting golf is beyond me.

You guys can throw your PC BS at me all you like, but in the real world money talks. Whether you like to admit it or not, the simple economic facts are that there aren't too many companies out there willing to throw 5-8m at a regular LPGA tour event. And let's not forget the television rights deals either. You can put whatever PC spin you want on those facts, but the reality is the money goes where the action is.

I don't know why I waste my time trying to make sense on this forum sometimes.
