Thank you Tom Watson

Congrats to Stewart Cink on the win 1st off

But thank you Tom,

Thanks for showing us you can play good golf beyond your 30's, even beyond your 40's, and almost beyond your 50's.

Thanks for giving hope to all of us more seasoned golfers out there. For showing us that on any given day, maybe perhaps we too can turn back the hands of time.

Thank you for showing us how the game is supposed to be played. For showing us how to play with dignity and class, even when things go bad. For showing us you can hit a bad shot, and not slam your club down, or throw it. For showing us a bad shot does not have to be followed by a string of cuss words.

Thank you for showing us how to play, compete, and sadly, how to lose with dignity.

Thank you Tom Watson!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

Couldn't have said it better myself and exactly what I was thinking when it all started to come unravelled in the playoff for him.

I first was a fan of Watson in the early 70's when I was starting to play competitive golf myself. I thought all those things about him then too and tried to pattern my game like his -- not only his play on the course but his respect for the game, the fans and his fellow competitors. He was a class act from the very first time I saw him play and he hasn't changed a bit in over 30 years.

Thanks Tom Watson, you made this a truly great Open Championship.

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

I guess I agree with you guys, I was pulling so hard for Tom-more than I've ever pulled for a golfer before. Congrats to Cink but really once I knew Watson was out of it I watched but could care less.

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

A 186 yard 8i that trickles over the green. Man, what a shame. I felt like puking when it pass the edge into the rough.

Thanks, Tom, a hell of an effort for a senior citizen.

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

I was really pulling for him...He's actually a couple of weeks older than me and can get senior rates (honestly - without lying) at several courses around here.

Tom Watson is now officially my hero.

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

I think Cink is going to be the LEAST remembered Open winner in history. I guess only his wife and mother were cheering for him (not sure about his mother though ). The Open 2009 would be remember for who got second, not who got first....

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

It's a shame Cink might not get what he deserves.. He played smart, clean golf through the end...

Watson however, was like a rock.. There would be NO WAY I'd be able to be humble, and gentleman-like for those last 2 holes after the way he scored. I'd have wanted to just toss in the towel..

His interviews were a hoot... I'm happy for the guy.

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

Did anyone else see the jab at Tiger in the tribute the network did to Tom after the tournament?

His interview was funny, I loved how he opened it up with, "this ain't no funeral".

A man from a different generation that many my age and younger could learn a whole lot from. I really do hate it for Cink, cause he will overshadowed.

Re: Thank you Tom Watson

I found myself torn, because in every other major before this one when Cink was in the running I was pulling for him. He is just a calm down to earth humble golfer. He doesn't ever go on cussing rants, and is a person that many young golfers could pattern their sportsmanship after. And yet there is Tom Watson, he was at his prime before I was even alive, and won is first British Open almost 10 years before I was born. But the way he carried himself, making jokes with the crowd when he hit a bad shot, never once getting over angry he was just too likable not to root for. This was a great Open, a wierd final round, but both Cink and Watson deserve to be remembered for their play and the way in which they carried themselves during and after the rounds.
