Thread: PGA Tour Pros with superseded clubs

    PGA Tour Pros with superseded clubs

    Just thought I'd list a few pros who I've noticed are using superseded clubs by their sponsors.
    1. Lucas Glover - Nike CCI irons;
    2. Steve Stricker - Titleist 755 irons;
    3. Padraig Harrington- hung on to his Wilson Staff DD+6 for ages & still might be playing his Pi5 irons;

    Any other tour players still playing superseded gear?

  2. Re: PGA Tour Pros with superseded clubs

    Lumpy still plays his Ping Eye 2's I believe.

    Think some of the Ping players are still playing their S59's and S58's. One (can't remember who) plays his i3's yet.

    Boo still plays the original Hbore 3w (or is it 5w?). One of the two.

    I don't care for Nike's stuff, but those cci's must be pretty darn nice. Never have heard a bad word about 'em.

    Nope. (I'm happy to be corrected but) I'm sure it's always been his Scotty Cameron.

    Kevin Sutherland may still play i3 irons?
    I think Dimarco and Calc still use Eye2 wedges.

  9. Re: PGA Tour Pros with superseded clubs

    Callaway had a difficult time getting a set of X14s out of Annika's hands... after many, many newer models had been released. Many of the Ping pros are still using the original Rapture driver. Ping had to pry the set of Zing 2s out of Westwood's hands. He had those up until just the last season or two.

    Someone keeps bringing up TW. He's still playing what would pass for a blended set of MP14/MP29s. That's what he began with. When with Titty, the 681T's (Hoffman forgings) were remarkably close to the blended 14/29 set. And, the Nike blades he played... up until these Victory Reds... were much closer to 14/29s than the Nike blades that were sold off the shelf. I doubt you would find much similarity between the Victory Red OTS and those in TW's bag. His Scotty putter is a carbon copy of an Anser that, also, was in his bag early in his career.

    Just because the marketing departments of the OEM's have to make changes in order to entice the public to buy new doesn't mean the touring pros are as gulible!!!

    I was going to say the same thing, he played them for maybe half of this season and then went back to the older Nike forgings.
    Blew up the bag, not sure what's going in next...
    Any suggestions?

  12. Re: PGA Tour Pros with superseded clubs

    I bet this list is quite long. You would have to rule out putters just to keep such a list even remotely manageable.

    I constantly see photos of pros using the original Adams Idea Pro hybrid, several Nike staffers still using CCI irons, and probably at least half of the PING staff is using prior releases somewhere in the bag. I'm pretty sure Vijay plays some older model irons and a fairway and I just saw a photo Ernie with an X fairway this week.

    These guys might be on to something; find something that really works and don't mess with it... nah.

    Callaway FT-5 Tour 9.5* -- MR Diamana Blueboard 63
    Bridgestone J33 15*/J33U 18* -- AXIVCore Blue 79/NV Hybrid 85
    Adams Idea Pro 20*/23* - VS Proto Hybrid
    PING G10 (5); i10 (6-9,U) -- AWT
    PING iWedge 54*; Tour-W 58/06 -- AWT

    Isn't it curious he started winning tournaments as soon as he changed back???

    Good point!! I always forget that high caliber tour pros like Tiger can pretty much have their clubs built to spec. I think it's well known that Tiger plays basically the same iron/wedge/putter setup he has played his whole life. Only thing that changes is the name on the club.

    Sure is interesting, now that you mention it I can't think of one Nike player using the VR series, Anthony Kim maybe. We all know Tiger made Nike in golf the way Jordan made Nike in basketball and he has always said he plays what is best for him...guess he proved it not even using the Victory Reds that were the result of red on sunday...
