Thread: FedEx Cup

  1. FedEx Cup

Does anybody really care? Does it have any meaning?

They have been running this commercial with Adam Scott and others talking about how prestigious having your name on the cup will be? Do you think anybody will care 10, 20 30 years from now? Who knows FedEx may be out of business years from now.

IMHO this playoff system is meaningless. The only real benefit is getting to see a couple more tournaments with the big name players at a time of year when they would likely be on vacation.

I'm sure Steve Stricker wouldn't mind the $10,000,000, though he's one over today.

    Re: FedEx Cup

Geoff Ogilvy said it best, quoted in a recent (maybe last weeks Golf world) saying that "it's harder to win the Fed Ex cup than the Masters, but I'd rather win the Masters."

Even with $10m on the line, I bet 100% of pros feel this way...
Blew up the bag, not sure what's going in next...
    Any suggestions?

    Re: FedEx Cup

I have enjoyed the golf in the playoffs so far this year but, I agree with fisher that the "cup" itself is pretty meaningless. The $10 million on the other hand, I would find to be quite meaningful.

However, it's easy to play for other people's money. Maybe they ought to have to put up $100,000 apiece at the beginning of the season and then qualify for the chance to win it all at the end of the season. That would be better. It would only take 100 pros to raise the money.

    Re: FedEx Cup

It's too early to dismiss the Fed Ex cup as meaningless in 10,20,30 years...

When it first came out, people said the same thing about the Superbowl as just nothing more than an exhibition game.

Plus, the format has changed every year so far...good chance it'll change again until it becomes an attraction to fans as well as players.

I agree about the FedEx deal, they may not survive long term.

And I don't see how this supposed playoff deal can crown the seasons champ? Tiger wins 5 events & the winner of the Fedex may not have won anything except 1 or 2 of these.

I feel the same way about a few other sports though. The Patriots go 16-0 in the regular season. Yet fail to achieve the goal of winning the Superbowl. Does that mean the team that won is better than they are?

Years ago Rusty Wallace won 10 Winston Cup races yet because of the DNF's in a few other races didn't win the championship. He was the driver to beat all year & had the most dominate setup.

  13. Re: FedEx Cup

I have a hard time with the concept of a trophy with a corporate name on it. Same goes for stadiums. In Philadelphia, the nearest metro area to me, the stadiums have had names that have gon belly up several times.

Are you going? Wife just gave me full week tickets for my birthday.

I don't much care what folks think of the cup situation - having the top 30 players in my neighborhood and getting to go watch is frikkin awesome.

Haven't bought tickets yet. I was deciding if I would be able to ditch work Friday to go.. If my boss wasn't to keen on me going Friday, I'd just con him into paying the difference and going Saturday or Sunday, if he needed me.

    Good wife for the tickets!!
