I'm sick and tired of Mickelson

Does anyone else here see a problem with Phil Mickelson becoming the "working man's golfer". I always read garbage and hear quotes about why so many Americans love Phil because he is "blue collar". Bull! If requiring a man bra as a professional athlete is what makes a working man, then half of Wal-mart will be America's next hero. It blows me away at how hypocritical we are. We cannot wait to build up the "next Nicklaus" at age 12, or the "next Jordan" at age 16, by rooting for them, writing absurd articles, and telling them they are the next demigod just so we can laugh until we wet ourselves at their demise (ie Tiger) only to jump on their generally lucky and loathesome competitor (ie Phil). The man reeks of laziness and foolishness - yet the media tabs him as "America's Blue Collar Working Man's Hero". If this is true, I'm sending my resume to Wal-mart tomorrow.

I think it’s more the media trying to form a rivalry between him and Tiger myself.

I'm waiting for Tiger to come back and wipe that goofy smile off his face. BTW I was just flipping through my Tiger book- "How I play golf", man his swing is drastically different than it was back then.

I've read that book a few times. It is amazing isn't it? I love that ambition. It reminds me of Hogan, never satisfied with just winning, its a personal issue with being the best possible. I think that should be the attitude of the working man's American icon - not manboobs 2nd Mickelson. I must say, I was venting when I wrote that about Phil and am suprised that I did not get ripped for the post.

I see nothing out there promoting PM as "working man". He came from a privledged background in Southern California and played college golf at Arizona State. As such he has never been associated with the "blue collar" life, such as Lee Trevino or Chi Chi Rodriquez who grew up dirt poor.

Where in the world did you get the idea tha PM was the working man's golfer or something like this??

I listen to a sports talk radio show for a few hours each day and they had a call-in one day asking listeners to explain why they love/hate Tiger or Phil. The overall perception was that they felt that they could relate to Phil and that he is not so uptight, well versed in public speaking, so proper etc, and that he "went for it" like so many of us do. He appeared to be more of an average man, less of a Berkshire Hathaway guy. So it may be a local idea.

LOL - Tiger was way more blue collar than PM. Interesting article in last month's GD with Michael Campbell... now's there's your typical blue collar guy. Also a great interview in this month's with DD. He basically hates Crenshaw and rips him to pieces... I love DD he doesn't pull any punches.

I read that too, great article.

bames, go to www.golfdigest.com. The article is near the bottom of the page under most emailed stories.

Vijah Singh, Now that's a man who has worked from the gutter to get where he is today. I read somewhere that as a kid he hit rocks with sticks and thats how he got into golf. He's not the most naturally gifted golfer but he's an example to all what practice and dedication can achieve.

Aparently I'm the only one who sees the irony of complaining about people trying to tear Tiger down-- while the poster tries to tear Phil down. Priceless.

Live and let live, guys.

That one went right over my head, bd. More coffee needed here!

They are ALL just very talented people doing an inconsequential thing extremely well. Honestly, can you think of anything less important than golf? I crack up when I watch TV shows like the rerun that was on The Golf Channel last night: 1992 Masters. Raymond Floyd (The Old Master, give me a ****ing break) staring intently at his ball as it soars towards the green.

I don't care about the pros personal lives, as long as they aren't animal abusers.

Spot on SDVM...In the DD article he said it very well just like Charles Barkley. "We're just basically entertainers".

Nobody should really take anything they say but with the biggest grain of salt...except for how to play golf and their perceptions of golf courses. Other than that, they ENTERTAIN.

That is all.
