Tiger: Tedium or Terriffic??

Well he's just about destroying every field he plays in. He has now won 50 out of 196 events he has entered - a phenomenal 25% winning percentage.

Yesterday as Furyk made a great charge - Tiger just continued to make birdies..

Is his domination Tedious/Boring or Exciting for you to watch? I feel a little of both frankly...

Very exciting. I've often looked back at Wilt Chamberlain, Muhammed Ali, or Babe Ruth and wondered what it would be like to watch them destroy oponents. I feel as though I have an incredible opportunity right now to watch one of the game's greatest. I had this very thought on Sunday watching the Buick. I have a 3 week old son and I was holding him wondering if he would have the opportunity to appreciate watching Tiger Woods. Barring a tragedy, I picture myself telling my grandchildren about witnessing his dominance in the final rounds.

Very exciting!
How can you get bored watching a living legend?
Are you bored because he keeps dominating or because nobody else at the moment just can't get to his level?
Tiger is a great ballstriker, especially with his irons. He's got fantastic game, and his recovery shots are nothing short of awesome. Coupled with his strong mental and focus, and his training devotion...
He's the elite of the elite....

I enjoy when Tiger is in the hunt. It raises the event to a higher lever. As Loop mentioned, he's the elite of the elite.

Nonetheless, when he is in the hunt, pretty much all of the media attention is focused on him. That I don't like.

As far as actually watching Him play - I marvel at it for all of the obvious reasons. He does simply amazing things.

On the other hand, to me the most entertaining tournament is one that is filled with suspense as the players go back and forth for the lead...the classic is when a leader has a two stroke lead and on the following hole - the leader bogies while the #2 player birdies...back to even. There's real drama/suspense there.

This rarely occurs in an event Tiger plays in. In tournaments where he starts the final round in the lead, I think he wins about 95% of the time (cannot remember the exact number). All the drama is gone and you just sit there and watch him destroy the field...so while I enjoy the shotmaking, the competitive angle of the tournament from an entertainment standpoint is most likely gone....

I have to say, I love watching Tiger. He's just so good at golf. I watched him in the Buick last week, and his golf's amazing. I was also amazed by his concentration. At the 17th, somebody chucked an apple at him, and he didn;t even seem to notice.

Good comment Bravo. It really is like watching a once-in-a-lifetime thoroughbred, like Secretariat or Man O' War just run past all the other really good horses. Thrilling, scary, and dumbfounding all at the same time.

I'm not too excited about his new facial hair; but I hang onto every move he makes while playing. As someone pointed out, it's not often that we get to watch a living legend.

I'm a fan of golf, and good golf at that. And, admittedly, I have a hatred for Tiger and everything that surrounds him. Jealously? Probably a little bit, but I think it's more for my longing of players with some personality and wit about them. Tiger is a robot, almost without emotions towards others (save the crying episode, which I've commented on already). This is definitely his way, but I hate it.

Fist pumping and "Get in the hole!" on every par 4, it just doesn't interest me. I'd rather watch the ladies play that hear the same jerks at every tournament yell the same crap.

This is why I get sick of watching Tiger play.

I do, however, marvel at his talents and his perserverance. Being a visible minority obviously has had zero influence on his career as he's never used it as a crutch or an excuse. He never even talks about it unless it's made an issue by the press. I love that about him. It's the "in your face, a$$hole!" attitude that makes me sick. Golf is supposed to be a gentleman's game, and this "extreme" face of it doesn't interest me whatsover.

Do I watch less golf because of Tiger? No. But if he's 3 up with 6 to play, I'm checking out the Rock, Paper, Scissors championship instead. So call that what it is.

Personally, I don't think i'd bother watching golf if it weren't for Tiger. In fact, i don't watch many of the touraments that he doesn't play.

Mostly due to the fact that the players are jsut boring. I hate seeing someone nail a 45 ft eagle and walk off the green with a touch of the hat and a little smirk.

Tiger gets excited, he brings me to my feet. The pumping of the fists and the screaming are just who he is and it makes golf all the more exciting. There is nothing better than seeing him being chased and he never lets anyone take the lead from him. He has the desire to win. And he doesn't jsut say "yeah,im going to go play some good golf tomorrow and see what i can do" the day before. He'll look you in the eye and tell you "I am going to win the golf tournament". Thats what i like about him

Maybe it's because im 16 and enjoy a more exciting display than a tip of the hat. But with new generations, comes new things.

I like Tiger, but I keep hearing how he is the greatest athelete ever. I do not buy that, MJ and Lance Armstrong both have a better claim to that than Tiger. I am neither a BB fan nor a Cycling fan but I realize it takes a heck of an athelete to be the top guy in either. MJ was the most dominant athelete in History, Lance Armstrong would be my runner up, I am not sure if Tiger makes the top 5 even in my book. Jerry Rice was as close to a dominant guy as there has ever been in football, save maybe Walter Payton and I think both of them would place higher on my list. Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens in Baseball, both higher than Tiger, I guess my issue is that Tiger hasn't hit "Old" for this sport and still continued to dominate, all of those other guys did that, even past what should have been their prime they were "The Man" every time they came out.

good post dave,

i consider myself one of tiger's kids, kids who've been drawn into the game due to his playing and what he'd done.

he makes the game look fun and exciting to me, brings an edge to it and brings some color and action to the game. and makes me want to go out and practice and make my game better.

he makes golf worth watching, in my opinion

that and the fact that i hate watching phil win all drive me to support tiger that much more

You forgot Wayne Gretzky! I think Tiger is in my top 5, like you said though, there's jordan at the top then Lance at 2, but in my mind, if tiger can hit the 100 career wins mark, he is the most dominate athlete.
