Women's Amateur Championship

I thought the final match, in which 14 yo Kimberly Kim beat Katerina Schallenburg (spelling? I'm too lazy to look it up...) was a great match. Very clutch shots by both players down the stretch. A steady hand from a 14 yo girl (who, BTW hits 280 yard drives - dammit!). Coming back from 5 down with 21 holes to play may not seem like much. but both players fought back and forth all match. Good stuff.

Too bad they didn't show the whole thing. It was a great finish though. Kim is 1 up as they go to the 35th hole, and they both hit shots onto the 17th green. Kim drains her birdie putt, putting all the pressure on Schallenberg who has to make it or it's over. Schallenberg makes that to extend the match to the 36th hole.

Schallenberg pulls her drive left and almost into the ESA on the 18th, and is faced with a difficult shot to get to the layup area. She hits a great shot, but Kim is still inside of her after two. Schallenberg pitches her ball too short, and is still off the green after 3. Kim hits a fine pitch to just past the hole, and is looking good that if Schallenberg can't get up and down from off the green, Kim has a simple two-putt to win.

But Schallenberg drains the putts from off the putting surface, meaning that Kim now has to make an 8-footer to close it out. Nice to have young nerves as she closes it out. Great golf at the finish, good good stuff.

Sounds like a helluva game. That's what golf is all about. The Brisitish Girls Amateur is currently being held at our club.

This young Spaniard Mozo girl looks like a potential Senorita Ballesteros. She already holds the British Amateur won a few weeks ago. Playing off +3 she blew the field away in qualifying. Her -5 first round was completed in very testing conditions. A truly great score.

She shot level par yesterday there too, Mark. The Pro was out watching her for the last few holes and told me she hit it just past the 150 yeard marker on 17, and they were playing it off the Blues. Breeze off the left. Some drive to get it there for an 18 yr old, or whatever she is...!
