My High School tournaments.

I’m bored, so I thought i would tell you guys about my experiances at this years high school tournaments.

Our team came second in regionals on a tight, fairly long 18 hole course in Green Wood Nova Scotia. The course was right in the middle of an army base so it was quit different watching airplanes take off, and land about 100 yards away on some holes. When we were navigating our way around the security, airplane hangers, and construction we came upon the course and as we pulled up we saw a sign that said ‘CAUTION: LOW FLYING AIRCRAFT’ for some reason I found that quite funny. We went up a day before the actual tournament so we could play a practice round. That..was not..good. I had a great time with the other members of my team, and coach though. We stayed over night in a motel. We played Nintendo 64 all night. And for those who still play the game systems and stuff, you know 64 Is pretty classic. I was going to take my father atari up but I didn’t. Anyway….the team came second to Horton high from kentville. We didn’t play to hot. Individually I came 4th, and another member came 3rd. there were 17 teams and 64 players. The top 3 teams and the top 4 individuals went to the provincials.

The provincial tournament was held a Le Portage Golf club In Cape Breton Nova Scotia. It was a 7 hour drive so we obviously went up Sunday morning with the tournament being on Monday. We only got to play the front 9 for a practice round due to darkness. It was a really nice course especially this time of year with all the leaves changing color. The were Big mountains surrounding the course which is also something I have never seen when playing golf. Monday morning when we woke up winds were gusting to 70KMH and it was pouring. We were suppose to have a 9:00am split tee start but that was pushed back to a 11:00 shotgun. That would have to have been the windiest condition I have ever played in. I saw a teammates size 12 shoes blowing away on the practice green. It was nuts. Flags were almost touching the greens they were bent over so much. On the first hole I hit a drive straight into the teeth of the wind that jusssst missed the fairway to the right. I got up to were I thought the ball should have been and I couldn’t find it. You can imagine how please I was walking back to the first tee to hit my 4th shot. At the end of the day the team came second again to the team that won the regionals (Hortin High). Individually I came 5th I think. I don’t remember. There were 17 teams and 64 players this time to.

All in all it was a good time. I really liked playing Le Portage.

Attached I have links to the Le portage golf club web site, and the scores to the provincial tournament.

Had to have been rough if only 2 scores posted at a "Provincials" tournament were in the 70s.

Shoot I barely made state(our province) my Junior year and you had to shoot three scores under 78.

All and all great job, Joel, Ever think about college golf? Honestly I thought you were older.

Thanks Jeff. I have thought about it but I'm not sure i have the game. I dont even know what I'll be doing for school yet. But im only in the 10th grade so I have a little time to decide. I know i want in on the R.C.M.P but I dont know if i will head right into that or get an advance edu. first.

Yes, the conditions were brutal. My big 125 pound frame had a hard time walking. It's a good thing my short game decided to show up and play with me. Could have been much much worse.

I found this article about the provincials.

125lb, hahaha!

On the bright side, you are only in 10th grade. Lots of time to develop your game, get some notice. Lastly, the first two years of college are all the same, so don't worry, you've got more time than you know.

I read that link, reading those scores and them talking about them taking the win is depressing.... (no offense)

You making fun of my weight? cause I'll fight ya..

yep, They were pretty proud they took us by a stroke. I almot had an accident in my pants when I heard my 83 was good. I was expecting a dozen+people to break 80. even in that wind.

To be honest Piper with the winds at 70KMH...

The scores aren't great, and I would have expected at least a few more to break 80, but that is some nasty wind.

Id expect at least 5 or 6 to break 80 if theyre good players, ive played in 80-90, its windy, but you just have to know wat to do, obv they didnt fair so well... My home course, 17th hole is 440 into the wind 9 days outta 10, i guess i just have a little more practise in it, but still you know wat i mean.

Definately, the whole West Side and South Side of Albuquerque can expect at least 15MPH winds in the afternoon daily, usually worse.

My strategy...don't play on courses on the West and South side.

My score was high due to a couple horrible triples. One on a 120 yard par 3 straight donw hill. I came up short in the buker. Now the bunkers have crushed rock (size of pennies) in them to keep the sand in the bunkers so it dosent blow away since it gets so windy up there. The 'sand' was really wet and i hit the ball first and went over the green. then i had a straight uphill chip that i came up short again. At this point i wanted to snap my 56*.front nine went like this. first 4 holes were into the teeth of the wind.

double, bogey, bogey,par,,bird,par,par,par,triple

Classic. Reminds me of my round at Cruden Bay. As we're getting ready to go out a member comes in an says, "aye laddies, you're not going out there, are ya'? My balls were blowin' off the greens..."

Piper and Jeff have obviously never been to Cape Breton. I am from there, have played La Portage and can attest to the scores being fair for the conditions that existed

It was the nicest course I have ever played. It was especially nice when I was there, there trees were all different shades of orange and yellow. I hope to get all the way back up soon to play Highland Links and a few other nice courses.

I wish I would have taken the camera for the practice round..

Highlands is nice, but I prefer Bell Bay.

Hey I said it's understandable.

Anyway, worst conditions I've ever played in I shot 8 over my normal handicap, blah.
