David Toms switches to Taylor Made

Toms has been with Cleveland for what seems forever. It had been rumored for some time there would be a parting of the ways. DT has quieted the rumor mills by signing with Taylor Made. Will be strange seeing him in an Adidas/Taylor Made hat instead of the "big C". Linked article about the signing, if you're interested...

Yes, another 'interesting' move. Over the years, we've seen great players give up the clubs they are successful with to sign with a new mfg for dollars. A couple come to mind... Curtis Strange won 2 U.S. Opens with MacGregor and then signed a huge contract with Maruman. Poof! Never heard from again. Corey Pavin wins the PGA with Cleveland and then signs with a Japanese mfg whose name I can't even rememeber. Poof! Never heard of again!

On the other hand, we've had players give up lucrative contracts or break long relationships because they won't play what the mfg deems 'best' for marketing issues. Billy Mayfair was on Ping's staff for years. Wouldn't play Ping's driver and was "forced" out. Toms had this issue with Cleveland. He still has the old QuadPro fairways and plays some old 588 irons. Neither are even recognizable by anyone under about 30 years old!!!! LOL Cleveland just couldn't convince him to put the newer equipment in the bag and made a corporate decision.

This last category... Toms included... do their best to make laughing stocks of we who live and die knowing we can buy a better game. How dare them!!!

Now, myself???? Do any of these manufacturers realize what an opportunity they are missing by not offering me a contract? Why, I'd even consider sacrificing the dollars, just to have the neat staff bag with my name on it and a bag full of the latest and greatest... as a token of their appreciation for my endorsement. On second thought, my endorsement could mean certain corporate suicide for any manufacturer of quality golf equipment!!!!!

I think Titleist is the biggest sponsor of all by far, right.

Nike has got to be one of the top three?

Callaway next?

Next would probably be TaylorMade? (Callaway, TaylorMade or Nike 2nd to 4th in some order?)

Bridgestone and Srixon are gaining some stars but probably Cleveland is next

Ping maybe after Cleveland?

Adams and Wilson in here?

Does Mizuno fit in here somewhere?

Yonex has dropped off the map with only Monty I think

It will be interesting to see what putter he goes to. I am assuming that the 12 clubs in the upcoming year and 13 the following year required by TM was to give Toms a year to find or have built a suitable TM 5W. Since he won his major with a Scotty, I wonder if he will return to it or get into a TM putter? I assumed he went to the Never Compromise like Vijay did as part of his Cleveland deal.

I'd predict he will return to a Scotty. The 5W will be a no-brainer once he has a little time to hit the R7TP 17.5*, that is one nasty 5W. If I could hit a 13* 3W I'd be all over one. Of course he'll have the luxury of having wood lofts adjusted. What's he gonna play for wedges?

He'll probly get some custom grind Tmade proto wedges made for him. Putter and 5w will stay in his bag, and will, i dont think theres guna be getting his putter or 5w outta there if they want him wearing their logo.

Interesting. I never even thought of his wedges. Off the top of my head I can not even think of a TM wedge other than the ones that match the iron sets. Does TM even produce an set independent series of wedges?

They have the TP-Y cutters. Nice wedges but a lot different than Clevelands. I had the 58-08 black LW. It was a high spinner for sure. I still think he'll like the TP 5wood once he gives it a shot. That is an awesome fairway wood, has near ironlike workability.

I think he'll go with the LT2's for irons. Toms doesn't strike me as a blade player for some reason

I can't wait to see his final bag makeup.

As far as TM and Wedges, their RACs are killer, from the first RAC(Which is what I have) to the new ones.

A very good source told me that Rossa is making a putter for him that is identical to his Scotty or as I remember, his old TP Mills...

Also, it is rumored that he will be playing the R7 TP irons. Not sure if they will be the cast or the tour forged version. Not totally sure about the wedges. Although, you can be they will be grinding him out some RAC's to look like his old Cleveland's.

I heard that Cleveland cut all of it's funding to everyone, except Vijay. One guy they are backing in 2007.

Looking to save money I guess. Problems at Cleveland?

I haven't looked into it yet in so far as a link or anything.
