  1. TOP FLIGHT D2 review

Ok a friend and I played these balls yesterday. The first hole was a par 3 over water...i stuck it on the green.....I was Like NICE....but it went a little down hill from there...the balls seem to want to slide off the face of the driver...both of us were having problems with ball flight...but on the green they were nice...decent feel and roll....all in all good ball but wouldnt buy it to play with...i have the three left that he gave to play with today and give them another chance

What model are you using? It's my understanding that the balls are proprietary to your swing type.

  4. That could be why they felt like they were sliding off the face. The STRAIGHT is teflon coated to limit spin, hence the sliding.

  7. I used the "feel" version in Kentucky and with the irons are great. I also got "weird" flight off the driver with this version so I'll try the "distance" ones and if those also fly like knuckleballs off the driver I'll chalk this up to experience and use them for water balls...

My wife plays the Maxfli Noodle. I get that knuckleball effect with the Noodle and some others that are made to compress with a slower swing. Usually only off my driver or sometimes my FW's. She found one of the D2's on the course and really liked them, and had me pick her some up to possibly replace the Noodle. She had been playing the Noodle for about the last 4 years, and had played the Top Flight womens ball prior, for which she thought the Noodle was considerably better. She knew nothing about the D2 and simply commented that she didn't remember the TF's playing that well.

From what I can see from the 3 types: Feel, Straight, and Distance. I see nothing to indicate the classification is any different than their older model or any other for that matter. So a Distance ball may help, but at the expense of being able to generate spin going into the green. Just my take on it though as they didn't seem to indicate any different on the box.

I plan on trying out a sleeve of the ones I picked up for her. I'll et you know if I see the same things I do with the Noodle. Personally I always liked the feel of the noodle and even play then on Par 3's or 4's where I use a water ball and tee off with my 4i/R or shorter, but you seem to be punished on well struck drives.

Played a round with sleeve of these yesterday. The Feel version. Interestingly enough, I didn't lose a single one which says an awful lot on my home course where that only happens a few times a year.

Never thought in my lifetime I would find a Top Flite that I could give praise too. I usually play clearance models of 3 piece balls. I guess after 1 round I can't say I have enough experience to say it is the ball of the future. Kind of a strange round in the sense that I noticed a lot less spin off my tee shots with all clubs, and probably the reason I did not lose any golf balls. I actually hit my driver better yesterday than I did in probably over a year. Not one terrible shot. Was it because of the ball, I can't say at this point, but it was dead straight for the most part. My driver is the only club that I usually have to guess between Draw and Fade and the reason I can find trouble with it at times. Although with this lack of spin off the tee and fairway, it did seem to have enough holding power on the greens. A great combination for my game. The ball felt nice enough on full shots and around the greens for my tastes. Personally I found it comparable but maybe a little harder to the Strata Tour Pro's.

Once I get through the 8 dozen golf balls I have in my garage, I could likely see playing a dozen or so of these to decide if could be a new ball for me. A few factors that may come into play. While I play mainly 3 piece balls, I buy them clearance from last years models for around $12 or less a dozen. So the question comes into play on whether they are worth the extra $4-5 over what I currently play. In other words, this is not really a cheaper option for me. I guess if I never lose them as was the case yesterday, then this is a no brainer. The other factor, it may take me some doing to get over the confidence factor of playing what I have always thought of as a Top Rock.

I think I will also need a few more rounds, because while I didn't lose any golf balls and played better off the tee, I also didn't hit anymore greens and my putting average was about 4 strokes worse. So in the end I scored my worst round of the year. So while I really didn't notice a big difference during the round, my short game in putting, chipping and speed control seemed to suffer. I also had 3 x 3 putts which is unheard of for me, and while 2 of them happened on GIR's only one of the 3 would I find acceptable. Maybe just an off day or a matter of getting used to a different ball, but my speed control and short game was not there as it usually is the best part of my game. I also notice some of the shot from around 100 yards just didn't seem to have the consistent carry I expected, while shots outside of 120 seemed consistent to what I am used too. So in a nutshell, anything inside about 110 yards was no longer the strong point of my game. I had a couple shots from around 100 yards or so, where I put what felt like a great shot on the ball and it took off looking like a pinseeker and ended up falling well short of the green, like 2 or more clubs short.

  10. The more I play it the more I like it but it doesn't compare to the premium balls.

I played the D2 Feel ball yesterday on an exec course for 18 holes. All irons, hybrids and a 3W.

I liked the feel and distance on everything longer than a 9i. Like PA jayhawk, I found several of my full 9i and PW shots that I thought I hit perfectly come up short. While I didn't feel the cover was hard, I also didn't get as much spin as I do from the Nike SFTs I normally play (and they are cheap too :laugh. I think these balls just want to be hit hard.

They felt great off the long and mid irons and hybrids. Off the longer clubs they spun well, in fact I hit a high fade with a 23 hybrid about 190 yds. downwind and stuck a very small green. The pin was back and I really thought I'd be long off the back. My ball mark was about 6 ft. from where the ball stopped, I was impressed.

The course was not busy, so I played a couple balls on about half the holes. I finished the round with the same 3 balls I pulled out of the sleeve to start the day. They wear well and the only cover damage was from a killer shot I hit with a 7i (think spin milled Vokey wedge :laugh where the ball had some plastic "whiskers" from a bit of groove damage. Once I cleaned up the ball you could barely notice it.

Since I didn't have a Driver in the bag I can't comment on that. I did hit a mammoth 3W with about a 200 yd. carry over water from the tee on the last hole. The ball flew high and straight and felt very solid. I'm thinking this ball likes some spin on the shot after reading the comments by wbl and PA jayhawk. I know the dimples are kinda funky looking, like they have a lot of aero resistance. That might cause some of the "knuckleball effect", I dunno.

Like PA jayhawk, I had a hard time not thinking Top Rock every time I looked at the logo. I guess it's from so many years of TopFlite making, ummm... rocks!

In all a darn good ball for the price. Probably an excellent ball for a mid-cap player or higher especially for the price.

I agree. The Red's for me are the best fit, but nothing compares to the premiums, like the RroV1, HX Tour and Nike 1.

  13. I like them (the Feels). They don't exactly dance round the pin but they stop ok and seem consistent distance wise, feel good off the putter (massively important IMO) and wear well. I'd say they are similar to the NXT and less expensive.

They are a great option for mid handicappers and above and a good ball for a practice round for the single digit guys. I've tried a few balls over the last year and though this isn't the best performing it's certainly the best value and does enough to make it the ball of choice for me at the moment.

In the UK they are less than half the cost of ProV1s, 330s, HX's and Srixon ZURs. Bit of a no brainer for me really.

  14. I've used the "feels" and "distance" and I'm not all that impressed. I have better luck with the "butcher's balls" (Slazenger "Raw Distance" titanium) and they're even cheaper. Nothing has approached the ProV1x for me though.
