Thread: Sonartec

  1. Sonartec

Does anyone know the status of Sonartec as a company right now? Last I had heard they were purchased by some guy who had owned or does own the Oilers?

As I'm replacing my stolen set I have considered dumping my 2 and 3 irons for a 5 woodish loft. Always loved Sonartec as they were one of the few to make a square face angle.
    TM RAC LT's 3-PW Rifle 5.5's
Wilson Staff Blade 2 iron bent to 16*
RAC TP 52 and 58 Rifle Spinners
Ping Eye 2 Black Dot LW bent to 63*
    Sonartec NP-99 bent to ~11*

I did a search on another forum site and found a link to this article FBI arrests Sonartec?s Pocklington | Golf Business.

There are some good deals to be had on Sonartec stuff. I recently made the decision to go back to the MD hybrid and picked one up for $18!

    Callaway FT-5 Tour 9.5* -- MR Diamana Blueboard 63
    Bridgestone J33 15*/J33U 18* -- AXIVCore Blue 79/NV Hybrid 85
Adams Idea Pro 20*/23* - VS Proto Hybrid
    PING G10 (5); i10 (6-9,U) -- AWT

Sonartec is dead and gone but you can still find their clubs on ebay and sometimes online golf shops will have old stock and be clearing them out.

As far as your comment about square face angles, pretty much every hybrid manufacturer I've seen offers one or more models with square face angles. Adams, Nickent, TM, Callaway (and all the others) plus all the major component manufacturers offer square face angle hybrids.

Heck, my Nickent 3DX DC ironwoods are dead square, I threw them on the rack and measured them. I love the 3DX DC ironwoods, btw and you can get them dirt cheap. Compact head, simple looks and yeah, square face angle.
What's in my Datrek Edge cart bag:

Tour Edge Exotics 10.5° GD YS-6+ Stiff
    Tour Edge Exotics CB1 16.5° 4W
    Power Play System-Q Hybrids 19
    °, 23° and 25° FST Pro White
    Acer XP905 Pro
    6-PW, Dynalite Gold S300
InaZone CNC Spin Milled Satin 50°/8°, 54°/14°, 58°/4°
    Boccieri Golf
    B3-M Heavy Putter

    Best Round: 68 (par 70, 71.1/123)
    Handicap: 11.8

I gave up on major brands touting square face angle when I looked at the Burner TP. Out of the 5 we pulled off the rack at GolfSmith we found from .5 degrees closed to 1.3 degrees closed.....and they purport 1 degree open. That's great you found some that are square, but once we went to the TP fairways and found the same thing in the 13* I said forget it.....if quality control is that bad I'm going back to a Sonartec with a fully bendable hosel that was made to be manipulated any way you want it. I had a 15 degree NP-99 bent to 13* loft and 1* open.....never should have given it to my buddy!

If you don't like the big OEMs or trust them to get a square face then go with components. Most of them or their dealers will hand pick a head for you with whatever specs you want.

And yeah, the big OEMs don't necessarily have terrible quality control -- just very loose specs.

Yea I'm pretty settled on just getting the cheapest 14-15* head in a Sonartec I can find and then letting my club guy deloft it and get it to 1* open. TM did a fantastic job on my irons b/c the lofts are dead nuts, but their driver/fw specs are laughable. Must be something to the way irons cure or something, maybe the metal woods change a bit.
