Thread: Wedges??

  1. Wedges??

Ok I think I have the Driver down now...Im moving on to testing out some wedges (if my man will let me demo wedges like he did drivers)..I currently play Ping Tour Wedges (50 52 56 and 60 depending on the day)..I dont really hit the 60 to consistent and so far stick with the 56 mainlyinside 85 yards..I do not have dillusions of making it on tour or playing USGA events so the new groove rule doesnt really matter att...I am thinking of a 50,54,58 set..Considerations are Ping Tour W, Vokey, Cleveland...any thoughts or others I should consider? I make decent contact...a slight digger..Right now I am very good out of the sand (LOTS OF PRACTICE)..and would like the 58 to keep near the same bounce as the current pings...

Hard to go wrong with spin milled Vokey's. I'll be replacing my Callaway with a Vokey sometime soon. Right now I carry a 50/54/58 and it works pretty well for me.

    Re: Wedges??

I personally like the Ping Tours because they have the feel and weight that I like. They also seem to wear a lot slower than many wedges I see and are a lot more forgiving. Have not tried the Ping Tour W.

I did however pick up the Cleveland 588 that is in my bag after the Pings, and it feels and plays almost the same IMO. The Vokey felt a little light to my liking when I demoed them prior to getting the Pings. I really prefer a heavier feeling wedges as it gives me more control.

edit 1 - BTW, the Pings tend to have a little more bounce than most others, so if you are good out the sand you may want to put a lot of thought into the bounce for your primary sand club, and whether you want to go with less bounce. I would assume you have fairly fluffy sand.

Sand is mixed..I play alot of different course...some fluffy some hard...I really like the Ping Tours I have...I do like the weight in them...I may end up not changing at all...I need to look up the bounce on the Ping Tour Wedges..the 60 has to much to my liking but the 56 is perfect...the only reason I am looking at changing is my swing change has take me from 2deg flat to 3deg upright...Ping states on the tour wedge max bend is 2deg..that and I would like to go 50 54 58...may try to find some Tours in those lofts and angles I need...

I played Titleist Vokeys for years, 56 went 85 yards and 52 was my 100 club....got a deal on some Cleveland CG 12's and changed my set up to 50,54 and 58...50=110 54=100 and 58 is now my 85 yarder. For some reason the Clevelands go further. Golf digest had a wedge test after I changed and they confirmed the same. Just wierd to me that two wedges that are basically the same shape would produce different distances.

If I remember correctly, the Ping Tours only came with one bounce for each loft in their stock models, unless you requested a custom grind. Was not until the W model that they gave stock options. You will see the bounces for the 52 (12*),56(13*) and 60(8*) in my signature. I believe when I looked the 50* was 12* bounce.

May want to check with Ping to make sure.

I had a fall off when I owned a Mizuno 56* wedge (about 10 yards most of the time), although I attributed to the forgiveness of the wedge at the time???

Cleveland CG14. Nicest feel on "tour"

50°-54°-58° I think its the best configuration. Think your PW should be around 45-47° which makes a 50° the way to go...
