So I acquired a couple of these wedges a few weeks ago and I have been tinkering around with them ever since. So time for a quick review.
They are made by an Irish company,
MD Golf, who have been in the golf business for about 10 years. I have to say their lines of clubs just seem to be getting better and better. They now have a new Seve endorsed line too.
Norman Drew was a semi-legendary Irish pro who played in a few Ryder Cups. His strength was his short game and the big feature of this wedge line is the sharp leading edge and low bounce. They were specifically designed for "links" lies, so I thought I would give them a whirl, me being Mr. Links and all.
MD have created a hybrid clone of the Vokey and Cleveland Classic wedges. Classic design offering a nickel finish, spin milled face with low bounce. They look quality as well, not at all reflecting their super low price, about 50% of a Vokey spin milled. Their new logo is an attempt at copying Mizuno's logo and they have a little shamrock on the back of the head, a nice touch. They come standard with Lamkin half cord grips and DG shafts. You can get them custom made at no extra cost.
I had "my man" grind a little off the heel area of the sole of the 60 degrees, but the 56 needed no amendments.
I have spent a few weeks "in the lab" with these including 45 minutes last night hitting chips, pitches and cut up / lob shots. These things are just GRAVY. I was worried about tearing the face off the ball, but so far these things are fine. I don't put a tremendous amount of spin on the ball but I find I am getting adequate stop on the 2nd or 3rd bounce from 60 yards in. These have found a place in the bag now and my Sonartec and RTG are now officially retired.
Like putters, wedges are very personal, but these are working well for me.
To summarise these wedges are aethestically pleasing, have lovely feel, detailed workmanship, and their reputation for quality appears to be very good. Brand snobbery in golf plays a part, people want to be seen with the larger OEM brands in their hands. But if you want a high performance wedge try these out and you'll be saving yourself a bunch of money to boot.
I'm not sure how easy these are to get in the US, but they are easy to get in Europe.
Oh and try this Tiger tip. When hitting a lob shot aim to hit it off the toe. By completely avoiding the sweet spot, the ball just lands totally dead with almost no roll.
