Thread: Sunset Beach Copper Yupon

  1. Sunset Beach Copper Yupon

I am a bogey golfer, and the weakest part of my game is 200-150 yards out. THat means that GIR is rare, and when I do get on, my first putt is usually pretty long, or I'll use putter from the fringe for my third.

Lately I've had a bad case of "thong disease" where I was leaving long putts short when I played on shaggy muni's. A solid milled copper putter is a really rare thing so when Chris of Sunset Beach offered a 380 gram copper billet putter for $300 I jumped on it with both feet. A milled BBC putter for that price is a steal!

I asked him to tweak it a bit to soften edges, and shaft it so that it hangs just south of square, it came in exactly how I envisioned and requested.

The headcover was one of the new snap fit things and it didn't fit into the putter slot so I PM'd him, and he said he'd fix me up. I'm expecting a new one any day.

The grip is a SSB branded grip, made by Tacki Mac and is a tad larger than I prefer, but I'm not messing with it until I get some more time in the saddle. Might swap it out for a pingman someday.

At setup, it sits nice and square with no tendancy to open or close. Clean lines without any distractions or bulges to break my focus. I like the way the pocket frames the ball without getting into my field of view, and the stable feeling on my backstroke. It's smooth and solid on contact, gives a very nice roll to the ball and it generally sends the ball right where I want. No wobble or instability on the backstroke that I get with lighter putters. Easy to push it through the ball right at the sweet spot. I want my putterhead to go right down the line on followthrough, and it seems to naturally flow that way without any concious effort.

I've got 3 rounds on it now, at 380 grams the head is really heavy, and I was afraid of it, and tentative the first round. The heavy head made distance control tough at first, but as I got used to it long lag putts started getting closer and closer, and have rolled several 20' plus balls into the cup. All 3 of those rounds have been on shaggy Bermuda greens, I don't have any time on fast bent greens yet. I don't know how the heavy head will work on those fast slippery slopes.

My usual bunch is used to seeing me with tour Scotty's and this copperhead generated a lot of positive comments. Quality is easily in line with those tour Scotty's and at a fraction of the price.

It's still in the honeymoon phase, but I believe that this puppy will make the A spot in my putter rotation.

    Wirehair likes it!

Shaped vaguely similar, but a world of difference. A billet block copper is the sweetest feeling putter there is.

Youpon acted up today and was recalcitrant, I'm going to speak harshly to it and hang it on the wall between a Palombi and a Tour Scotty. It'll get the message.

A stern talking to and not letting it sleep in the bed is normally enough to get a Sunset Beach back in line!

It may be made more angry by being put on the wall beside the inferior Scotty, you might want to move the Palombi to the middle and let the Sunset Beach stay beside it.

    Having played it...once.. (not enough!)

the outstanding thing, is it just a bit smaller (looking only?) head, than the mallet I play, and it just appears so very right to the eye at address. Dang it , I just need some $$$$$

Missed several putts that I should have made - Distance control is OK, still a tad strong, direction is problematic. Dunno about the heavy head. I'm starting to think when I get over a putt, that's not a good sign.

    Sadly, it's on the wall.

I really liked this putter's looks and a solid copper putter is the dogs dangles, but the ball didn't go in the hole. Went back to my old Newport and putted lights out to shoot 86. Won both the front and back.
