Putting epiphany - #5

I’m not a bad putter but it is probably one of the weaker aspects to my game, and often prevents me from realising good / great scores.

I recently added a Scotty Circa #5 to my collection, thanks to Stanters. It is 35” standard set-up. I played in our club championship last Saturday and gave it a "baptism of fire". I didn’t play well but I putted great. I just went down the base of the grip and carried on with my usual routine.

For those that are not familiar with the Circa 5, it is an unusual mallet, with a pronounced bellied out body and it is hollowed out (which makes repairing pitched marks interesting). I checked the Cameron site and it is no longer listed, hmmm? But here is a decent review and pic
Titleist Scotty Cameron Circa 62 #5 Putter, Read Reviews, Compare Prices at Golfalot.com

I have tried bucket loads of putters and decided that none gave me as much consistency as my Wilson TPA VIII. It was back weighted and cut down to 33”.

But here’s the thing, this putter is perfectly balanced, suits my eye and gives me a beautiful roll. On Saturday 90% of my putts were great putts that just didn’t go in (I’m old enough and wise enough to accept that some days they just don’t go in). Both my playing partners commented on how well I putted all day, even though I had burned the hole all day.

My weakness is not getting the ball to the hole, caused in large part by decelerating. Well this thing gets the ball to the hole and has massively increased my confidence.

Anyway on the back of that I played 9 holes the other evening with my FiL. It was a cold windy night. Here’s my putt count:

Single putt from 3ft - bogey
Single putt from 2ft. - par
Almost holed from 30 yards from apron of green, a lip out leaving me a tap in (counts as single putt as first was off the green) - par
Single putt from 4ft - bogey
Single putt from 8ft - par
Single putt from 12ft - birdie
2 putt from 30ft -par
2 putt from 20ft - par
Single putt from 5ft - par

That’s 11 putts folks, I have no doubt shattering my putting record! If I’d driven the ball well I would have been under par for sure.

It’s a strange bloody game golf is.

Re: Putting epiphany - #5

I've had a few SCs in my time. I stuck with a Pro Plat for almost 2 years before I figured out that I couldn't putt consistently enough with it, although it looked good. I'd putt with a iron bar if I thought it would get it in the hole in fewer shots.

Sorry, not much love for Scotty, but lots of love for this flatstick!

Here it is on the Scotty website;- Scotty Cameron - Archive Detail

It was part of the original Circa line in 2006 but was replaced by the #6 in 2007, nice putter, gives you a nice upright feel at address you feel like your right over the ball.

So pleased you like it. I putted well with it and it made me try some more mallet styles and I found one I liked even more, although it was close.

A happy deal all round then IG. Good stuff.

(I made it myself from some old baked bean cans and painted it black, the grip is made from inside out ribbed condoms - only cost me £3.75 and a couple of cuts)
