Mine averages 18%

There is NO reason (server side ) that this should be so high unless you are running other apps in the background.

I have no software installed that would cause these spikes, If you are having a problem it's on your end.

The memory usage is because IE doesn't release memory when it's done with it, at least not in this version. I find it hard to believe that it takes 50MB to run a simple webpage... as far as the CPU goes, that is kind of puzzling. Sling does the website run a lot of client side crap (java script/beans/applets etc)

My questions too.

GD runs the same basic "holiday theme" with all the snow, etc. Not even half the usage immediately after changing between pages.

I don't care much, but there's something to this.

GD runs entirely different software. The snow is a simple javascript.

There is nothing else except for ads, some of the animated ads may cause a bump.

As I said, I average 18% in FF and it jumps up to 30 something in IE7.

I have no trouble at all loading any images or pages.

One other thing to consider is that we are on a shared server. If you guy's want to go dedicated then just shoot me $1500 (a year) and I'll set it up.

This should have no bearing on the CPU on our end. It would be interesting to see the results with the snow and some of the animated ads turned off.

I'm not getting undesireable results by any means, I just also find it interesting that IE seems to need more resources to process this site vs others.

AGreed.

In the big scheme of things, I could give a flying feck. But it's more answering the question than anything.

I shut off all my background processes, including my firewall. No dice.

Edit: Just checked with Firefox, it's very high too. I'm gonna try some other sites running the same software...

Firefox is taking 53,320k. My CPU averages 15-18%. That's with Winamp, AIM, Steam, and a host of other applications running (two firewalls, Spybot, AVG, etc.)

I don't have any problems. I'm on a dual core processor producing 2 gigs each, with 2 gigs of RAM and a 512mb video card. On a laptop.

Get Firefox and donate your 486x60 to a museum already.

Ottawa Golf is running a similar version of vBulletin. Same CPU usage, no snow, nothing.

My guess it's the base software. And, now that I've figured that out, I still could care less.

SOme of us require IE for certain apps to run, mostly work related. Just a bitch to switch back and forth.

So the question is what is up with the software which causes the client to eat up CPU???

BSG, Hotmail etc run on 1% CPU. There must be some serious java script running to eat up that much CPU

All I know is this:

On my office computer (dual-core 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM)

I log onto GolfWRX:

iexplore.exe uses 27% CPU to load the page, then the CPU usage drops to 0%, until I load another page.

iexplore.exe uses 40MB RAM, and that stays absolutely static until I load another page, when it goes up by 1MB. It releases 500K when I go back to the home page (I understand that IE6 doesn't do a great job with RAM.)

I log onto Shottalk:

iexplore uses 50% CPU time, and NEVER GOES TO ZERO.

iexplore uses 25MB to start, and then continues eating more and more RAM WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING. Right now I've been on the site, typing this for about 5 minutes, and it's using 189MB (and still chewing).

RAM usage is now 200MB and still chewing.

Three minutes later and it's up to 220MB. And still chewing.

I don't have this problem on other sites!!!

It's not just a problem with my computers!

well, once again my results are very different.

Going to wrx in IE and FF the CPU spikes as high as 91% and settles around 40% (slightly higher in IE) and I am still consistently around 18% here.
In all cases, I notice no significant adverse effects in the way the pages are displayed (not looking at the cpu monitor)

Also, Wrx uses different software. Joomla on the front end and invision powerboard for the forum. Apples and oranges.

Also this board is heavily modded. 7 scripts are running (this will drop to 5 before Jan.1) one is for tracking, 2 are for snowflakes and the rest are for ads.

It's got to be the mods. I went to an Acoustic Guitar site I frequent that runs vbulletin. Same deal - no CPU usage unless a page is being loaded, and RAM usage is static.

I'll watch it after the snowflakes are gone. And I'll run SADblocker to kill the ads. Could LinkConnector be the culprit here? Everything I've read about it tells me that it's pretty unobtrusive, but they do use their own brand of cookie implementation.

<edit> Running SADblocker (which kills pop-ups, Flash, DHTML, Web-page dialogs, and common banners) didn't help.

I still think it's on your end.

This is what I have about 5 seconds after the page loads.... snowflakes and all.
