What are friends for?? (Isn't that a song title?)

I've had a couple poster on ShotTalk want to be my "friends"! (Heck, at my age, most of my friends are playing checkers and shuffleboard in nursing homes!!!)

I get a PM saying someone wants to be "friends". I got to the link, put a check mark in the little box by their avatar, and hit "confirm"... or whatever the affirmative reply is.

Okay, is that all I need to do?
What is a "friend"? I thought we were ALL friends on here! What specific differences is there is you have a friend? (Do we have to have dinner together once a month? Sorry, I only sleep with my putter so don't even go there!!!) Please explain to this ol' man what I need to do and what I've done!!!!

It's part of the social network feature of vbulletin (like myspace and facebook).
totally useless for the way we use the software here but has some appeal to the younger crowd I suppose.
