It is what it is...
By Bob "Slingblade61" Berry

Running a website, no matter what the subject matter, can be frustrating at times. I look around at the competition and very often see things that are exceptional in their quality and insight. They have one thing in particular that Shot Talk does not, gifted and motivated article writers.

This is frustrating to me because the lack of fresh content suitable for the front page is something that I would very much like to do better.

What we DO have that I think sets us apart is a very lovable bunch of regular guys. No professional writers, no professional golfers.....ok, well, maybe we have just a few of those and no pretensions.

The people who participate in the forums here come from every corner of the world and every imaginable occupation and social background. They all have one thing in common. They absolutely love golf!

These are the people who buy the gear, the end user so to speak. They know what they like and are not timid about sharing it. They are also eager to try new things and share their findings with the rest of us. It strikes me that because we do buy our own stuff rather than have it supplied by an OEM for review, the opinions are more honest because there is no implied obligation to say something nice about some piece of gear we got for free.

That said, I present for your consideration, Rockford35's Driver Shootout;
Quote:

After a week of working my butt off, I decided that +15 and decent wind was the right ingredients to take out the drivers to the range. I need an idea of what 08 will look like, Big Dog wise.

Here's my rundown:

Callaway FT-i 8.5* Tour Fade

While the head shape is strange, it grows on you. I have this thing mated to an Accuflex Creation 65S at 45.5". The sound from the head is odd, but coming from an FT-3, it's old hat.

Performance wise, this is a low launching ball rocket machine. I can set up dead straight down the pipe and swing for the fences. ALMOST automatic. However, this thing is not bombproof. It can be wayward if you get lazy. Right is a DISTINCT possibility if you're not careful.

Very good distance and great feel off the face. Very forgiving too on good swings when the ball is outside the spot. High marks for that.

Callaway FT-5 Tour N 9.5*

This is is also mated to an Accuflex Creation 65S. Traditional Cally head shape but more confidence inspiring than that of the FT-3. I loved that club, and this is just an improvement on a winner.

L-O-N-G. Wow. This is top 3 distance wise of the longest drivers I have hit (behind the Geek and the Launcher 460 Ti). Not as consistent as the FT-i, but it's early in the season yet. Higher launching (surprisingly), but not enough for me to worry about it.

These two are fighting it out for bag time. It's splitting hairs, seriously. One has more distance, the other consistency, but those two factors are so close, it's a tight one. I'll give this second place by a c-hair.

The 2008 PGA merchandise show

Tim "ualtim" Smith

There will never be another PGA Merchandise show like your first one. You walk on to a floor just filed with miles and miles of equipment, training aids, golf course architecture, every conceivable golf fashion item, and then a plethora of other items that do not fall into any specific category. You run into to sellers that run the range from a 3 card monty dealer all they way to the Wall Street investor with a line of people just waiting to buy his or her wares. Every booth is trying to catch your eye or, more importantly, a moment of your time in a attempt to get you to pay attention to there product. Products from as lowly as a single golf tee, up to $10,000 USD Scotties, all they way to a souped up fleet of golf carts that will set you back six figures. Everything and anything that is remotely related to golf is there.

Editor's note;
Check out the blogs
We sent 4 guys to cover this event and they have posted shed loads of information on the latest gear (Croc golf shoes? Puhleeze...)

There are also many more pictures in the photo gallery.
