I love the US Open. It's my favorite major. The qualifying process is excellent.

It's the exact same qualifying as The Open, just with joe buck and Greg Norman...

Ok, I'll bring it up: according to what I've read, Tiger has signed up for the US Open, but says he doesn't know if he'll be able to play due to his health. Is he taking a spot away from someone else? I ask because I don't know how it works.

He's exempted from qualifying because he's won the tournament within the last 10 years.

I get what you're asking. I believe the answer is yes because the field limit is 156 players for the first round on Thursday.

Yes, in fact recently an alternate (name?) was pissed because Mike Wier decided to play in a tournament he was exempt in, and proceeded to shoot 79 or something and promptly WD, wasting the spot that the alternate could have taken.

Tell the alternate to suck a rock and become exempt if he wants to play so bad.

Yep, it would all depend whether TW actually shows and goes off the first tee. If he does, he has taken his exempt spot and one of the 156 spots. If he falls down and impales himself on his driver on the first tee... the spot is gone. If, however, up to something like an hour before his tee time he withdraws... an alternate can be named to the spot. Personally, I'd rather see TW grimace in pain and withdraw just before he cards a 92 on the first day than see Hymleck Ugmendagaski take his place as first alternate.

Back to Tiger. If he plays I don't take it as he would be taking a spot from someone else. He's earned a spot with his past play.

Same here. He has a right to play, he has a right to sign up and not play IMO.

Given his health, I think the moment he realizes he can't play good enough to keep from withdrawing during the tournament, he ought to withdraw and let someone else have a shot. Just seems like common courtesy to me.

He registered for the 2014 US Open while recovering in hopes of playing but withdrew when it was evident he wasn't ready. I expect he will do the same this year if he feels he can't go.

It's also common courtesy to move over when someone is merging onto a highway, however, it's not required. I don't fault those already on the highway for not moving over to let me in. It's my responsibility to merge safely.

I feel the same about this, although I agree with you, it would be nice of him to bow out in time for someone else to play, however, I won't fault him if he doesn't. That other player is responsible for playing better to get an exemption if they want to play that bad.

As my grandmother says, "Dems da breaks" or maybe it's "Dems da brakes"...whatevs
