The group I golf with is having a 3 club challenge next month. It's 3 clubs total and not 3 clubs plus putter. I'm thinking 3h, 7i, and sw and put with the hybrid.

You could also putt with the belly of the SW, done that a time or two.

My Mini-1.5 set at 16 degrees. Long off the tee and an excellent fairway wood for long par 5's.
7-iron. Good approach iron from 140ish on in. Can do all kinds of chip-and-run with it.
I would probably opt for one of my Anser 4's as a third club. Can putt from off the green quite a ways due to the increased loft. And, as others give up a putter for something they are not used to, should have an advantage of bagging a "real" putter.

The 7-iron could change, based on Par 3 lengths. You have to be able to score on the par 3's. Would want an iron long enough to reach the longest par 3 and choke down/punch for the shorter ones. How many of the par 3's have traps in front of the green? Can we run a longer iron on or do we have to carry a trap? So much of the decision depends on the course and how you plan to play each hole.

I'd probably go 5i, 9i, putter. Putting a priority on green side and putting as much as possible while keeping a moderate gap in the mid-short iron range.

I need all the help I can get putting. I hit my 5i around 200, 210 if I'm hitting well and my 9i is good for all the green side shots and I can handle it out of the bunkers.

I feel like this would give me the best option for scoring. Even a par 5 at 600, I could reach with 3 good 5i's. I should be able to get plenty close to a 200-210y par 3 which is as long as I see around here.

My big problem would be 170-140...I wouldn't have great distance control at those distances and not great spin off the 5i...so holding green's could be a problem. I would have to try and hit short and roll on probably. 140 and under wouldn't be much problem.

Solid choices. I'd probably use a gap wedge rather than a SW, but yeah.

I would use my 54° SW.

Why? On par 5's, you could go driver, driver, driver, putter, putter... and use a different driver each time.:D

Many many moons ago I played in a staff ONE club challenge. It was one of the best afternoons in a long time. A member of our staff had a summer trailer in a park that had a very rough 9 hole par three course. It was very rough, but served us well on the day. Teams were selected well ahead of the tourney date and strategy began immediately. Who would bring what club in order to most benefit the team. It was so long ago I can’t remember what our team ended up with for our set, but I contributed a 7i. It was a great day and I believe the winning team was E. much to the shock of just about everyone!!
