My oldest daughter (15) is having surgery late this morning to remove a benign tumor from her parotid/salivary glands. The tumor is about the size of a ping pong ball. It doesn't appear to be attached to her jaw. This is a fairly common surgery, but will require an incision (much like a face lift) from her ear down her jaw line, stitches, and a drain tube over the weekend.

The biggest risk for her is if they happen to damage a nerve in this area, she could have partial paralysis of that side of her face. Her surgeon has never had this happen, but has advised us it is possible.

So, anyone so inclined, please keep her in your thoughts today...her daddy would really appreciate it!

I know we joke a lot, but i really hope everything with the surgery goes as well as can be expected.

Best wishes to you, your daughter, and your family!

Sincerely hope everything went well. We are so blessed to live in a time when, daily, we witness miracles of modern medical technology. Good surgeons can do marvelous reconstruction work. A few years ago, we had a masonry foreman cut across the nose and cheek with a diamond blade "Quickie" saw. Over 600 stiches inside his mouth and across his nose/cheek. The surgeon was able to rebuild the sinus cavities and did a marvelous job on his face. He returned to work in 4 weeks and, even then, you could hardly tell he had even been cut. He expected to have almost all evidence of the injury disappear with time.

Keep us posted how everything goes.

Long day, but a good day. Surgery wound up starting late and taking 3 hours. He got all the tumor out, nerves are fine, and she's doing great! The doctor was very happy with the results, which really pleased me!

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, my friends!

Great to hear things went well. Anything medical with your child is pretty scary.

Good to know everything went well. Just remind her to use a lot of sunblock and avoid sun as much as possible to avoid scaring

xam, she's a beach girl and a lifeguard, so we and the doctor have already talked at length with her about that. She doesn't want scarring, so she plans to be very careful. Luckily, she's got long hair that will cover the area if she wears it right, so that's going to help.

    MC,

A little scar won't ever deter her from being who she is. Hopefully she isn't uptight about it. :)

I'm glad things went well. Give her all our best. Well, except Clark.

As Rock mentioned scars aren't any big deal, I used to be self concious about mine but now I don't care.

    Yeah...she's still laughing about that!

Rock's right, from an adult's point of view. From a 15 year old cheerleader's point of view, it's more important. But, she does know that in the long run it won't matter, and she's actually doing extremely well attitude wise. Wouldn't say she's uptight, but I'd say she's looking forward to seeing it heal up and disappear. Which is exactly what it's supposed to do!

Yeah, you guys are the best! Well, except Clark.
