Oakland is a bit dodgy, as you southern hemispherians would say, but SF is pretty damn cool and they are neighbors.

They both have their pluses and minuses but California as a whole is a cesspool. I will not morn it's death when it slides into the Pacific ocean.

Oakland is not as bad as the media would have you believe, yes there are areas to avoid just like any large metro city will have. But there are nice areas as well as some decent touristy type crap.
