SWMBO talked me into entering our club's match play championship. I play a shit-ton of golf and was reluctant to sign up for more. I really like our leagues and I would have to give up one of them for a month or so IF I won my matches. So I decided to enter (because I do like match play) but play with abandon (ala Phil Mickelson) and totally NOT worry about losing my opener. Played today and did just that. Driver on every hole, no lay ups, swing away and whatever happens, happens. I beat my guy 3 & 2. Now I gotta play a match next week. Crap.............maybe I'll try harder and lose that one. ;)

I even tossed the Tommy Armour 855s irons in the bag and my old Louisville Golf persimmon face putter. I was sort of trying to lose. Damn irons are awesome.

Funny you should say that. SWMBO and I were having dinner with another couple last night and I told him I'd be totally OK with losing since I was reluctant to commit to the event anyway. He said "you wanna lose? Play the hickories". :D

I’ve seen the photos you post. I’d say the latter. But I mean that in the nicest possible way.

So I had my round of 32 Match Play contest today after advancing from the opener. I used the minimalist bag and the I-don't-care-if-I-lose attitude and shot 79. Beat my opponent 1 up by sinking a 2 footer for par on the 18th hole. I was down 1 five different times and squared it up on 17 with a birdie. My opponent was giving me a stroke on 18 so he went for the green in 2 and made it. I did my normal drive-bunt-bump-and-run geezer game and had a 10 footer for birdie that I misread and it broke left- made the 2 footer for par. He 3 putted for par from the top of the green about 70 feet away. On to the round of 16!

I know, right? My opponent was a "young" 60 year-old bomber. He teed off with his TM P790 3 iron on nearly every hole with a high draw that was 30 yards past my drives every time. All his shots were high draws and LONG. He hit driver on only 2 holes (both par 5s and reached both greens in 2). Impressive to watch. He was giving me 6 strokes (7 hdcp vs my 13hdcp) over the round. Just goes to show you that an old short knocker can still score with a bomber. He shot 77 to my 79. He was a true gentleman and really fun to compete against. I did not expect to beat him, but I had my best stuff today.

I played my round of 16 match today and lost 2 and 1. I played a 6 handicapper who was giving me 5 strokes. I started by hitting the first two fairways and greens and 3 putting both greens to go down 2 right away. I just did not have the putting touch today. My opponent was steady with all pars until about the 11th hole I think. I was down 3 most of the match and was down 5 after 12 holes. My putter woke up on 13 and I won 3 holes in a row to battle back to 2 down with 3 to go. We pushed #16 with pars and we pushed #17 with pars, and that's where it ended 2 & 1. He was a true gentleman to compete with. I gave him all I had today. Maybe next year?

Slapped together a Minimalist bag again for today's geezer gang outing and scored my personal best on my home track in VA. 3 birdies, 7 bogies and 8 pars for a 76. Apparently, 8 clubs is enough.

    Old banger bag:

    Titleist 905R 10.5*
    Perfect Club 21*
    Cobra Baffler 5h 26*
    PING Eye 2 7i
    PING i3 Blade 9i
    Cleveland CG15 52* & 56*
    Odyssey 2 Ball
