Is it possible to reshaft Ping irons on your own or do you have to send them back to Ping to do it? i seem to remember hearing that they did something in the hosel that makes it so you have to send it to them, but I could be crazy.

You can reshaft Ping irons. I've done it. Many shade-tree clubmakers do it. But, I wouldn't recommend it.

Ping hosels are taper tipped. You need to have/buy the taper tipped shafts for a direct replacement. Most of the high end iron shafts are made in taper tip. However, you will buy them in a set of 8, not one at a time like parallel tip.

Some will try to drill out the hosels and use parallel tip shafts. Again, can be done. I've seen many.... MANY... sets of Ping irons botched by those attempting to install parallel tip in Pings.

If you do send them back to Ping, they will come back looking like a new set. It will cost you a bit more than doing it yourself. However, you will have what is a custom-built... just like new... set of irons when you get them back. You WILL get what you pay for.... no matter whether you go the cheap way or have Ping do it.

It is virtually impossible to match the color of Ping epoxy. Back when I was in the business, it was easy to tell a factory set of Pings from a shade-tree set just by the epoxy. We would pay good dollars for a factory set. We wouldn't pay much for a "glued together" set, since we had no idea if a professional had performed the work or a "basement builder".

Any idea what the ballpark would be on a reshaft of say a set of i3's? I wouldn't attempt to drill out the hosel, most of the Ping's I have found have the JZ shafts or JZ cushin shafts. Are these anything like Dynamic Golds?

the big problem is Ping epoxy (its a proprietary water based epoxy). It takes a ridiculous amount of heat to break down. I have had iron hosels turn red and still not have the epoxy break down.

Nope! If you can find a set of ZZ65's in Pings, those are the closest proprietary shaft to the DG. The JZ has a lower kick point and is a little lighter weight than the DG shaft. Ping has great customer services. They usually respond to e-mail inquiries in short order. Go to their website and fill out the questionaire for club repair. Or, just call their 800 number. I'm guessing it's going to be around $20/club. But, it'll be done correctly and you won't believe how "purty" the irons will look when you get them back.

Beware that Ping likes to swingweight many of their clubs relatively light. When I bought my i10s (used) they were standard at D0 with the ZZ-65 shafts and they felt dead. I pulled the heads, added tipweights to get them to D2 (D4 for the PW) and now they feel totally different. Much better and I'm hitting them straight.

Now if I can only fix my errant driver.......I'm gonna try tipping the shaft 1" and reweighting for a 44" total length.

Yep. Had it done at my local club maker. Replaced Ping S Steels with light weight Nippon R steels. Worked out very well.
