Set makeup

So I have pondered my set makeup for a while, I want to play 8 irons/hybrids (p-3, with the three switching out with the 3hy when I need to) but I also want to play 3 wedges, plus my 5W, 7w, and Driver. With putter that all adds up to 15 clubs. I'm thinking about dropping the 7w, even though it is one of my most comfortable clubs in my bag. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Do you have any yardage overlaps?

Do not drop the 7w if it is your go to club.

Keep the 7w, drop the 3iron (and or hybrid). That is probably your smallest distance gap in your stated bag and since you like the 7w, keep it in the bag and learn how to choke down it to hit it shorter to make up for the 3i distance.

Set makeup is such a personal thing and is so dependent on your ability. I played today and only used about 7 clubs, but was carrying 11. My driving was on today so the 5W only got used off the tee box on some short par 4s and one long par 3. On most of the rest of the shots I used 7 iron thru my wedges. I only hit my 8 iron once and did not carry my 4 or 5 iron today. I cannot advise you on what to carry, but I would say that you should gather stats on what clubs you use the most and are most confident with. Truthfully, once you get proficient with teeing clubs (driver or FW), wedges and the putter, you could get by with just a few in-between clubs that get you in position or out of trouble. I never carry 14 clubs, and sometimes only carry 8. My sig lists 13 clubs, but this is what I own in that set, not carry.

My ususal kit is driver, 5W (or 3W but not both), a 21* hybrid, 6-W, UW, SW, Putter for 11. When walking I carry Driver or 3W (not both), 21*h, 6, 8, W, UW, SW, putter for a total of 8.

Checking specs on your "new/old" irons, your pitching wedge is 46 degrees. That strong loft would seem to justify your 3 additional wedges. I do agree, there is no reason to carry 7w, 3-iron, 3 hy... Choose one. Most, today, would be better off tossing their 3-iron in the corner of the garage and forgetting about it. Our course is extremely tree-lined and I use my 3-iron to punch out from under trees.

The posters who suggest a couple rounds keeping track of what clubs you use makes sense. I've seen a couple of really good players do just that. They will record every club used on each hole, for a handful of rounds. It usually becomes quite clear what clubs you use... or don't use. Statistics can be your friend.

That's the problem with the 7w, I feel great with it In my hands, but I rarely use it, if I need to lay back off the tee, I will probably hit 4i or that 19° 3hy. Here are my clubs by loft and my distance, this is just out of the pool of possible clubs

62°w- 75/80yds (also work around the green)

56°w- 90/100yds (go to bunker club near the green)

50°w- 110/120yds (go to for bump and runs up to 30 to 50 yards off the green)

47° Pw- 130/135yds (also for fringe and greenside rough chipping)

43° 9i- 140/145yds

39° 8i- 150/155yds (also for fringe chipping)

35° 7i- 160/165yds

31° 6i- 170/175yds (great club for laying up 140yds out of DEEP rough)

27° 5i- 180/185yds

23° 4i- 190/200yds (go to club for staying accurate off the tee)

20° 3i- 205/215yds (great club to attack one par five at a local course that is reachable, also perfect for the long par three on my home course if the tee is all the way back)

19° 3hy- 215/225yds (great club to hit lay ups into long par fives with, can hit really well off Lies, ball up, down, rough, etc.)

7w- 230/240yds (really good club to go back on if I still want distance off tee, and driver isn't behaving)

5w- 245/250yds (great off the deck for par fives, also very comfortable)

8.5° D- 265/280yds (bombing it lately, lofted it down from 12.5, gained huge distance)
