1 Irons

When I went to buy a new set of irons a few months ago I asked the owner if he could try and get me a matching 1 Iron. He looked at me and asked why would I want one of those. Nobody can hit a 1 Iron. I told him that I've spent 30 years working on my swing and find it quite easy to hit. He then commenced to try and sell me a hybrid instead. Is it THAT unusual to use a 1 Iron? Has anyone else had a hard time finding one?

If you leaf through alot of sites, most companies don't offer a 1 iron that matches the set. Some companies offer driving irons which are basically a 2.5 iron.

I remember hitting a 1 iron a few times at the range. Then I hit my 5 wood. Then I kept hitting my 5 wood and left the 1 iron at the range. Never could figure out why people would hit a 1 iron when a 5 wood or 7 wood are just as easy to hit with more consistency.

Just my $0.02.

I've always found it a great club for those short Par 4's. I can work the ball with it a little more than I can a wood.

Sure, I with ya.

I'm just saying that not every guy wants a 1 iron in their bag. Not even pros. The only guy I can think of that had one in his bag was Daly, and I'm not even sure he still does.

So, basically, when you have little or no market for something, it becomes hard to keep the production up. Sure, there's going to be a few here and there, but for what it's worth, the only guys that would get them would be tour players.

Good luck in your search for one. If you get one, let us know how it goes.

I had one once. You have to be "on" to hit it correct. I sometimes now carry a Hogan 2 iron and when I hit it sweet there is NOTHING like it.

Cyberious.....try ebay. Personally I love hitting my Mizuno MP - 14 1 iron. They stay slow, they drive through the wind and like you said are good on 360 to 400 yard par 4's for position.

Of course everyone has heard that one liner from Travino. When asked what he would do in a storm, he said he would head out to the course and hold up his one iron. "Cause even God can't hit a one iron!" :p

I have a Ping Eye 2 iron that I use when the ground bakes up. I can hit that sucka for miles off the tee. Not sure that I would trade now for the hybrid.

What a silly rule 14 clubs is. I could see myself with 35 in the bag (just in case!!!!).

I have a 2 iron I like to hit. Man, that thing cuts through gales, and if I'm on gives me almost 3 wood distance. But I leave it at home if my swing isn't quite up to snuff.

Problem Solved

So I think I solved my problem. I had my club doctor adjust my 18 degree 2 iron to 15 degrees. So in essence it is now a 1 Iron. I tell you it is like golf bag viagra. I hit it a mile...ok well maybe only 220 yards but it feels like a mile. I removed my Strong 4 wood from the bag. I can control the Iron a little better. Off the tee I probably get another 10 yards or so. I figure I'll get a thin piece of lead tape to cover the 2.

So basically many years from now when I get to heaven I figure my regular weekly foursome will be God, Ben Hogan, Me, and maybe JasonMacIssac if he's interested in being the fourth.

thats great. I had a blade two iron since i started playing golf, but a 1 iron was just out of the question. First of all, I rarely hit my 2 iron to the green. I only had to hit my 2 iron on a few par 5s (mostly i go with 4,3 irons or really long par 5s with 3 wood) and the reason that a one iron is not popular is you just cant get it up in the air. I hit my 2 iron about 230 yards. Pros dont play with 1 irons bc even they cant get it up in teh air enough. The tour greens are like glass. The greens are impossible to spin off of. The only player with a traditonal looking club(blade) 1 iron may be davis love. A 2 rion bent to 16 deg i think. I saw him tee it off with it at Shinnecock. He hits it higher than i hit my driver (and I hit it high). Thats is why 1 iron is almost banned. If you like it then thats good but asking why 1irons arent popular is just ignorance. Esp now that there are hybrids like rescue mid and sonartec md. Much better clubs (workability too).

You know, I was thinking the same thing when I first used the 1 iron but I was surprised how high I hit it and how long. On the range I flew the first 5 balls flush 240 or 250 with good hight. This was with a tee though, from the fairway it is extremely hard to get up in the air but still goes 220 or 230 which is excellent in the wind or on a links style course.

I wouldn't call it ignorance. Actually that's a bit harsh and somewhat insulting. I was asking this austere body their thoughts. The same exact style of club doesn't always work great for everyone.

BTW, my last IQ test (about 6 months ago) was 140. I teach at a university part time and am one of about 50 researchers in the world in my particular area of expertise which deals with computer engineering at the raw machine instruction level. I have 2 Master of Science degrees and am working on a PhD. I would have been ignorant only if I had assumed something without asking first.

Oi, the two of you are too much. Mizuno, who is too snotty to even consider a brand of club because of an unwillingness to accept that the brand may have advanced beyond it's initial offerings and Cyberious who feels the need to defend his honour by spouting his qualifications.

While I agree it was a stupid comment by MPed, it wasn't much better of a response.

Kiss and make up.
