With the way water availability is going this just might be the future of golf in some areas.

There's actually a novelty course stretching across the Nullabor Plain (ie. width of the outback). That photo could be from it. Basically you play one hole, then drive for however many miles, play another hole etc etc. A fun way of breaking up what would be a very boring drive.
