That is part of it, but that can also be achieved by using a softer ball. Like WBL said, when the air is warmer, the molecules move faster meaning that the air is actually thinner. And since the air is thinner, there is less air resistance acting on the ball meaning that it will be able to carry farther.

Why would it get thinner? The atoms are moving faster, so what? It would still be the same amount of air in the same place just the individual molecules and what not would be moving faster.
