Maybe some of you young guys don't have them, but I'll be willing to bet that most of us over 40 have some body parts that are painful (and not just through self-abuse). :)

The main one I seem to have acquired in the last few months, since I have started golfing, is biceps tendonitis in my right shoulder. My God, sometimes it hurts so bad I can't get to sleep. Funny thing is, it doesn't hurt when I swing a golf club.

NSAIDS like ibuprofen help some, but this thing just doesn't want to go away.

Anyone else, so I won't feel so sorry for myself?

Actually the only time I had a golf-related injury was tendonitis, after hitting off mats at the local golf dome all winter long. It lasted the entire golf season.

From now on, I only go to the dome about half a dozen times throughout the winter.

Doc,
I think I had exact same ache, except left shoulder, am lefty golfer. kinda like in the rotator cup or cuff? kenisiologist (sp) friend gave me some stretching exercises and I tooalways noticed relief after a round or turn at the range. Finally got a new matress and problem went away.

Oh, yeah, right in the front, there is a spot where the long biceps tendon goes over the head of the humerus, and if you touch it just so OW!!

Funny you should mention the new mattress. I have 2 bedrooms, one with a soft mattress and one with a very hard mattress. I have been sleeping on the soft one for several months, and I just switched back to the hard one 3 days ago. Maybe it'll help.

I could bitch about my back but I think everyone's read enough about that. :) Other than that I did have some tendonitis in my right elbow last year but I just wore a brace for a few weeks and it went away.

If you don't already, start excercising on a regular basis. It works wonders on bad backs and other old body parts.

As opposed to your new, younger body parts.

Pig's heart, Dave? LOL. :D

The only way I could get any new younger body parts is to get divorced first. :p

I do try to exercise: light weights, some stretching & pilates, abs & back machine. But when it hurts to move in certain directions, exercising is more like torture.

Speaking of new parts, one of my techs got a new knee last year. She had suffered with terrible degenerative joint disease in that knee for years. She loves the new knee, walks much better, and has no pain in it. But it does squeak sometimes.

Heh, I went through a frozen shoulder, and I'm under the age of 40. Man, that sucked, and I'm still having trouble getting adduction/internal rotation restored. Of course, it's kind of led me to thinking about just how bad my muscles and joints were getting, especially when I began golfing again last August.

From what I've read about it, the muscles are relatively easy to limber up again, but joints are more problematic. And as you probably know, if it continues or worsens, it's a good idea to consult a doctor.

Try ancillary, non-back specific exercises, doc. Again, a fairly large study published a couple of months back found that exercises like running (and walking) were beneficial and hurt less than back-specific exercise; in fact, they reported that specific exercises could actually exacerbate things.

Laying across an exercise ball stretches my back out nicely.... I use the ball for all my core work.

I'm gonna disagree a little bit. The back specific excercises I'm doing are working wonders. But, and this is a big but, the workout was designed by a spine specialist and a physical therapist for my specific problem.

Without any knowledge of what might be wrong with someone's back then I'd agree with Farq. Especially since I've started walking & using a pull cart while playing.

Good deal, Dave. Gotta tell you, when I do all of my core work at least twice a week, I have no back problems, so targeted exercises absolutely work. And I've found that running and other aerobic work is the bomb for me as well.

My brother, on the other hand, has been down with a really bad back for 4 years now (3 disks). He stopped all PT a few months after diagnosis, and it was because he insisted the pain got worse when he exercised. I thought he was full of crap until I read that study, then I felt pretty bad about it. Luckily he's finally accepted things. His back still blows, tho, and he does no exercise. I can't get him to do anything.

Doesn't work for everyone that's for sure. I know a guy that's had seven back surgeries. Nothing's helping him except drugs.

I do my excercises 5 days a week now and I'm playing basically pain free. As long as I stop after 18 that is. Tried going for 27 last week and paid for it.

I've been taking Excedrin 3 times a day since Sunday, and sleeping on the rock-hard mattress. Seems to be a little better, pain wise. This beer I'm drinking seems to help, too. :D
