AG, I know you live somewhere in southern Illinois. That area was devestated, last night, by tornados. We were on the KY/TN line, watching the storms pass just to the north of us. Had one tornado warning for the county we were in. Son blamed us. Said the only reason they were seeing tornados was because we brought 'em with us from Kansas.
Hope you're okay!!!!

I was in a tree Sunday with sustained 30 mph wind and gusts into the 50 mph range.

Let me tell ya...I thought the tree was going over and I was a gonner a few times.

My daughter and her family live in a suburb south of Peoria and were at church when the tornado's came through. The whole congregation went down into the church basement. Their suburb was okay but the one just north of them got it bad.

In the last 5 or so years tornadoes have been crazy around here. There have been some bad ones and several deaths. I don't remember it being this way as a kid. Sunday was scary because the local news was tracking a tornado that was headed our way. When they said we had about 6 minutes and to take cover, it just stopped raining outside and the sun came out, it was eerie. I looked to the west and it was black. Then the wind picked back up and it started pouring. Then the satellite went out, then the power. We don't have a basement, so we all went to the center of the house and you could hear the wind and rain pounding the house. Then as fast as it came, it was gone. It lasted maybe 10 minutes. In that short period I bet we got an inch of rain...we recieved 2" all day. There were limbs down all over the place and the yard was flooded, but all was well.

An unknown aspect of Alabama living is the fatalistic viewpoints that people here develope over time toward 'Nadoes. Its almost a "its their time" outlook. People are rabid weather watchers.

I have had a lot of tornado shelter installers in my store with their new boats and trucks.

The next land improvements I am involved in will have a lower or sub grade story level that is built of steel reinforced concrete. They make foam forms you drop your rebar into and pour. And mine will actually use steel mesh, like expanded metal if its above grade.
