The culture has to be turned around. The fact that people turn up to an event thinking it’s okay to do that is what needs to be changed.

I don't disagree with you. I still think attempting to 'change the culture' in any specific way, is going to cause the problem to get worse. It's like telling your teenage daughter she can't date the guy with the motorcycle.

They attempted to curb the streaking at major sporting events by simply not showing them on TV. Streaking still occurs, I don't know if the frequency of events has dropped off or not.

Short of not allowing any spectators on the course, you're not going to stop it. The worst you can do is remove them from the property, and if they're ready to leave anyway, that's not much of a deterrent.
Remove them immediately, fine them, and ban them from attending future tournaments. You may not be able stop it completely, but it would prevent repeat offenders.

The Masters seems to do a good job of limiting it with the threat of being banned.

All that needs to be done is set an expectation and enforce it. You start taking some of these donks by the collar and sitting them on the curb, it would change behaviors.

I think the proliferation of Social Media has gave every Tom, Dick and Harry the feeling that they are somehow important and have a voice. This combined with the fact that everyone is now somehow special is a toxic brew.

I am a bit surprised to see so much of this behavior at the Open. They have some of the best spectators and it is usually reserved. Sad...

Removal is already a thing, and as I said, it's not really much of a deterrent.

They could theoretically hand out fines...I guess...however, how are they going to collect? Take a bunch of individuals that refuse to pay to small claims court? It would be a civil suit assuming they put in the 'agreement' by purchasing a ticket or attending the event that a fine would be assessed for yelling. I know I wouldn't pay them shit if they assessed me a 'fine'. I can't imagine the type of people willing to yell shit out like that are willing to voluntarily pay a fine.

Ban them from all future tournaments? Are we going to start checking everyone's ID upon entry and checking it against a database of people that have been 'banned'. That's going to cost millions to implement and maintain. Not feasible for something that will never generate any revenue, IMO of course.

My idea...allow the gallery to collectively beat the shit out of anyone that does this. No repercussions. You agree by attending to have your ass beat for yelling shit out. Massive legal issues here, obviously.

The Masters does not have this issue. Admittance to that event is so sought after that tickets are handed down through generations. No other tournament... including the other majors... has that same draw. The Open Championship does a rotation between a number of courses. You will have different attendees/drunks each year.

In the NBA or college hoops, fans will wave behind the basket on free throws and do about anything they can to thwart the other team from scoring. NFL or college football? Home teams drown out signal calling. The one... the ONLY sport where people are supposed to be silent during play is golf. IMHO... Get over it!!!

More than half the attendees at any professional golf event are guests of corporate sponsors. Many have never played golf other than a drunk-fest-scramble. No excuse for being idiots. Just reality. You cannot have a pledge or questionnaire filled out before admittance to an event or sponsors will cut their support. If the kid who sold the most cars in a dealership territory gets drunk on free beer, he'll go back and sell more cars.

We who play the game understand how someone shouting in the middle of a backswing can cause a pitiful shot. Many who don't have that love for and experience in the game don't. Certain players have a larger following at events and more bad-mannered fans. Woods is one. I know he shouldn't have to but what about earplugs? Would that at least soften the sound from the crowd?

The problem today happened on 18. What good would it do for security to remove an attendee on the 72nd hole? To turn the crowd loose on an attendee will get someone arrested. How much would the players be able to focus if there was an all-out melee in the stands? Not a viable solution.

Folks can cuss and discuss bad manners of "stupids" all day long. It is a known fact today's society is full of people who could care less about what is fitting and proper. The more negative reaction from players, the more the escalation will be seen from those wanting their five minutes of fame. One thing the networks could do would be to have a switch on tee box mics that would shut off any crowd noise during the shots. When people knew they wouldn't be a spectacle for the entire television audience to hate, would they be as motivated to act out their ridiculousness? In the meantime, maybe even encourage fan noise and shouting instead of holding up the quiet signs. If on every shot players became accustomed to fan noise, maybe it wouldn't be such a distraction.

Limp- Switching off the mics would be a good start. You could put the whole telecast on a slight delay perhaps?

I would disagree about the Masters. People are people. The Masters has an expectation and does not tolerate Bullshit. Act the fool on Magnolia Lane, and you will be escorted to the nearest exit courtesy of two Georgia State Troopers.

I grew up playing a muni next to LAX...I play at Griffith Park which is next to the I 5 in downtown LA...I sometimes play a 6 hour round at Rancho Park, the most crowded muni in the whole country...try 3 groups deep on each tee as a distraction...these spoiled cats with their swing coaches and sports psychologists need to toughen up

Sadly, watching the PGA Tour events I can definitely tell it’s rowdier later in the day. I can hear the ground mics pick up the most moronic shouting post-swing. Alcohol would be a big factor.

Surely the course security could target the rowdy, drunken groups. I think to make a difference the PGA Tour needs to drive the cultural change started with an awareness program about where the line in the sand is and what happens if you cross it.

Evolution is failing us. The more refined species that's meant to replace us is late in coming.
People have no standards for their own deportment or expectations for anybody else's.
Class no longer exists.
People call near strangers by their first names.
Civility is a historic concept, now.
I know guys who don't even own a suit.
Nothing we can do now.
Best to try not to think about it.
