I've come to associate dark beers with being bitter but I guess maybe that isn't the case. So many choices, so little time!! Any one heard of Leinenkugel? This is super popular in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. I hate it but both BIL's love it.

Smithwick's is good.
I like Guinness from time to time.
Capital Brewery Island Wheat (a local brew; Middleton, WI) is also good.
New Glarus Brewery (of New Glarus, WI) Yokel is pretty good.

In general, I can't stand American macrobrews. Miller, Coors, Anheuser-Busch, et al. Piss flavored water. I might make an exception for the Leinenkugel's Red or Creamy Dark, but I'm currently boycotting Leinie's as long as the fruit-flavored Sunset Wheat is on the market.

Top 10 cities for beer lovers - Fall Travel - MSNBC.com

1. Amsterdam
2. Berlin
3. Brugge
4. Burlington, VT
5. Dublin
6. Mexico City
7. Montreal
8. Portland, OR
9. Prague
10. Sapporo

OK, so I was in Amsterdam a few weeks back, and I will agree that they do drink a lot of beer--to go along with the Belgian Fries (with mayo). Pretty good actually. But the 2 real reasons that they drink so much beer is that, first....

cycles.jpg

Everyone walks and/or rides bicycles. So they build up a massive thirst.

And second....

They need to divert their attention from the city's most popular pastime...

Spaten Oktoberfest
Theakston's Old Peculiar
Stoudt's American Pale Ale
Sierra Nevada IPA
Guinness

Not available in my area but may be my favorites if it were:
New Belgium Fat Tire
and I will add Shiner Bock to the list after my recent trip to Houston. I actually liked it better than Fat Tire side by side.

My local staple that is acceptable and probably the lightest I will drink and darkest my wife will drink.
Yuengling Lager

Although I rarely drink beer anymore (just because of the calories and carbos) - I love Fat Tire. Also Sierra Nevada Pale Ale...On the UK side...I like a Black and Tan (Harp's Lager and Guinness). It is an intriguing blend of flavors.

These beers just POUR the weight on me though. I am fat enough as it is

I was always more of the Bass and Guinness type for Black and tans. Probably because I only usually like the beers that are darker going in than coming out. Although Harp is one of he few I can appreciate.

My friends wife drinks Coors Light, for which we usually figure we could duplicate by watering down what comes out or simply scooping a glass out of the toilet bowl.

Heineken tour! Dude, you had a much better time than me. I was there to work. :emot-ange

However, aside from the red light district, the canals, and the tons of bikes (got run over once), the most memorable characteristic of the city for me was that it was so quiet! In the middle of the day, walking in the flower district, it was like you were in the country. The low traffic volume makes it very unique as a city.

& unfortunately (well, fortunately, really), I drank more wine than beer while I was there. Did you do any other tours?

The Munich pics were cool too, btw.

Try a New Amsterdam. It's a semi-microbrew out of NY. Nice and malty, but smooth.

My standard list remains unchanged, tho...

All around: Stella
Winter: Black & Tan (Guinness/Bass)
Summer: Sol (not Del Sol)

A great way to catorgorize your beers :D

All around: Boddingtons (England)
Winter: Guiness (Ireland)
Summer: Brahma (Brazil)

For black and tanners, try a Bumble Bee. Boddingtons over Guiness. Good stuff.

Come to think of it, I have one Boddingtons left in the fridge thats calling my name....

Yeah we did the Ann Frank house, Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. Never made it to the Red Light. Had my Wife, Daughter, and Mother-In-Law with me. So we stuck around the Museum district.

On that same trip we drove from Amsterdam to Paris. Paris is more crowded then Amsterdam, and the traffic is a nightmare. Paris is such a cool city though. I actually like it better then Amsterdam.

I was there for 2 days, so I was able to jam in the Anne Frank house; very intriguing, yet depressing, as should be expected, I suppose. Not enuf time for much else; the red light is open late, so it was easy to "window shop." ;)

I like Paris as well, but the language barrier is a bit difficult. And it is kinda dirty. My favorite so far is Vienna; since I can fumble along with German, I found it much more accessible, plus it's clean and very picturesque. The grid is pretty intricate, with lots of alleys with unexpected oases--like little pocket parks and cafes around every corner. Really neat.

Will I bought some Stella Artois today and it's pretty good. Still a little bitter but a really good "taste" to it.

Eracer, is Pete's Wicked Ale hard to find and where is it made?

:)

If you go to their website, they have a map of where their beer is sold. Looks like its made in San Antonio Texas.

My wife bought these for me yesterday in Bastogne Belgium, on the Battle of the Bulge Tour (I went golfing instead). Pretty cool collectors beers.

Back in the olden days (60's and 70's) good old Old Style on tap. Best American beer ever made. Of course it's all but disappeared now and not the same as back then.

Back when I lived in southern MN, that's almost all we drank. Well, Miller longnecks too.

Old Style was really excellent beer and (almost as importantly to us) cheap too.
