I was wondering if anybody happens to know who makes a good driver form not alot of money. Im pretty new to the game and would appreciate any advise. I was looking at a Taylormade r5hundred i think at academy they also had a Maxfli blue max or something like that, i would probably go with the taylormade but was wondering if anybody that has hit one could tell me if that is a good idea or not. I am currently hitting a big bertha, but it is an older club and i would prefer something a little more up to date.

The Cleveland Launcher 400cc and Mizuno MP-001 400cc are both good drivers and around $150.00 new now.

Also look on ebay, but be sure to demo first.

The Taylormade R580 is running 149.99 now, the XD is at 199.99. Toward the end of the season you should, theoretically, see prices going down. Make sure you get one before Christmas creeps in, though.

Callaway Great Big Bertha II 380, both Pro and Regular series.

Strap a Grafalloy Blue onto that thing and hold on.

The Cleveland Launcher is another safe bet. 400CC model is sweet and alot cheaper than big brother 460CC.

Plus, who needs 460cc?

Oh right, Dave.... :biglol:

I have the XD version of the R580. This club will change the way you play the game. 440cc. You won't be disappointed. I've hit the Launcher and the G2 and while both are very sweet clubs and plenty long, I do not find them any longer than the TM 580. If they were I'd have had a launcher with NV in the bag long ago... actually I talk myself out of buying a new driver every week.

The stock shaft will take some getting used to, but if you're new to the game you prob won't notice much of a difference.

If you want to go used, you should be able to get something good. I just saw a 983K with an NV-65 for $150 used. Similiar deals are probably around.

But if you want to go new, a LOT of folks hit the R580 for $150. All-in-all it's a good driver from everything I've witnessed.

Oh, and stay away from those 540cc driver heads. Anything more than 460 is illegal according to the Rules of Golf. fyi.

For what it's worth, I got a Miz 460 with NV for about $120 US on ebay awhile ago.

Good deal.

Well Clevend just closed out the 460's and the price droped down quit a bit. You can get a 460 for $199 at Dick's Sporting Goods. For some reason they don't have the regular 460 on the web page. But I was just at one this weekend, and the prices have droped. Plus the woods where cheap too, like $99. You can check Golf Galaxy too.

If 460's are going for cheap, just think how cheap those 400's are gonna be! :D

Before Christmas because I assume the currently low prices might rise a little with people buying gifts, I dunno. That's how it works with everything else. I'm new to this "golf" game.

Is it true that "GOLF" came from "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden"?

Fancy that..

Nope, that's an old "wivestale". Here's the real story.

Like most modern words, the word "golf" derives from older languages and dialects. In this case, the languages in question are medieval Dutch and old Scots.

The medieval Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" meant "club." It is believed that word passed to the Scots, whose old Scots dialect transformed the word into "golve," "gowl" or "gouf."

By the 16th Century, the word "golf" had emerged.

The way I heard it, "golf" was chosen because "SHIT!" was already taken.
