Bizarre rules violations...part 1

Reading "Playing by the Rules" by Arnie Palmer.

Bought this at the weekend and have started to read it after finishing the new Harry Potter book within 24 hours. (If you're reading this, Rowling, hurry up and finish the next one!).

Anyway, this was an impulse purchase following the revelation that some here don't care about the rules of golf ;)

One bizaare rules violation concerns Johnny Miller. I'm sure we all remember Woosnam having 15 clubs in his bag during the 2001 Open. Well, Johnny Miller once played an entire round of the US Open with 15 clubs in his bag and received a 4-shot penalty when the round was over.

Why didn't he spot it during the round, you may ask? Well, the reason was that the club in question belonged to his son. And was a kiddies plastic club that had been stuck in the bottom of his bag and not spotted at the time. Officials deemed it to be a legitimate club and the penalty was imposed.

More later...!

What a story!!

BTW - in our tourney this weekend as we teed off - there was clubcounting a plenty...

Kind of begs the question about the number of clubs people keep in their bag...

Apparently the 14-club rule came into effect after discussions between the R&A and the USGA following the 1936 Walker Cup when one of the US players went round with 32 clubs in his bag. It's the caddie I feel sorry for...

So if I had a 12-inch plastic club in my bag, they would deem it legitimate?
How amusing.
BTW, also bought a rules of golf book made by the Walrus (aka Craig Stadler).
It's a little booklet full of illustrations for us dyslexic :)

Loop, if you had 12 inches of anything, it wouldn't be legitimate. ;)

I carry more than the allowed number of clubs for almost 95% of my rounds. Only during tournament play do I select my precious 14. I like to keep myself on my toes with everything in my bag, and I can't bear to leave anything at home by itself.

Except my 3 iron. The hybrid takes it's place. :p

4 woods, a putter, 8 irons, 3 wedges. That makes 16. For tournaments, i pull the 56* wedge and either the 3 hybrid or the 7 wood, depending on the wind. But everything else stays.
