Oops, Kinda funny but that's a sleep disorder. During the active dream phase of sleep the brain neurochemistry is set to activate a voluntary muscle paralysis to eliminate precisely what happened. Happens to humans also.

If that paralysis did not occur think of the competitive advantage those noctural critters would have had in our distant past. We would have been someone's tasty lunch. And falling out of trees on a regular basis.
